Fuming France in no hurry to mend Australia ties

Times of Malta

More than two weeks after the shock scrapping of a submarine contract with Australia, France is in no hurry to mend ties with Canberra as it weighs up whether to extract a cost for its ally's "betrayal". France recalled its ambassador to Canberra to protest the September 15 announcement by Australia that it was scrapping the multibillion-dollar submarine contract with France in favour of a new deal negotiated in secret with the US and Britain.  The envoy is still in Paris, with no date set for his return... Metro project could lead to more pedestrian zones - Ian Borg

Times of Malta

The implementation of a metro project could see more public spaces in Malta becoming car free as a mass transit system would allow areas to become completely pedestrianised, Transport Minister Ian Borg said on Sunday.  On Saturday evening, the government unveiled a proposal for a 25-station underground metro system which would link some of the most frequently congested and densely populated areas of the island.  Drawn up by London-based consultancy firm ARUP, the system will run a total of 35 km of track incorporated into three lines... In a state of flux - Lawrence Zammit

Times of Malta

When talking with someone earlier on this week, he said that we are in a state of flux. It set me thinking and I did come to the conclusion that the global geopolitical economic situation (I know that is quite a mouthful) is indeed in a state of flux. Uncertainty reigns as to how things will develop on a number of fronts. This will then have a certain impact on the economy. What impact this will be is still unknown. We could start with the coronavirus. It is now becoming recognised that the term... Читать дальше...

'Government should admit PN's metro proposal was what country needed'

Times of Malta

The government should "bow its head" and admit that the PN’s 2017 proposal for a metro was the key measure for the country to be more efficient, for people to spend fewer hours in traffic and for a cleaner environment, Opposition leader Bernard Grech said. Speaking in a telephone interview on party radio station NET FM on Sunday, Grech said: “Four years ago we had a Labour government that ridiculed our plans, but today it should bow its head and admit that our idea was what the country needed."... Eurozone economic sentiment rises unexpectedly in September

Times of Malta

Eurozone economic confidence improved marginally in September, survey results from the European Commission showed on Wednesday. The Commission said that its economic sentiment indicator, an aggregate gauge of business and consumer confidence, rose to 117.8 in September from 117.6 in August. The result is above a consensus forecast by economists who expected the reading to come in at 116.5. The stability of the indicator in September resulted from improving confidence in construction and among consumers... Читать дальше...

Religious quotes and news - October 3, 2021

Times of Malta

‘Top of class’ mentality In his Angelus address last Sunday, Pope Francis said: “Sometimes, instead of being humble and open communities, we give the impression of being the ‘top of the class’ and keep others at a distance; instead of trying to walk with everyone, we show off our ‘believer’s licence’: ‘I am a believer’, ‘I am Catholic’, ‘I belong to this association’, and the others, poor things, do not. This is a sin. Showing off one’s ‘believer’s licence’ is to judge and exclude. Let us overcome the temptation to judge... Читать дальше...

Sausages, tall tales and empire - Colm Regan

Times of Malta

We are caught transfixed in the realities of current UK politics dominated by recurring cycles of popular spectacle.  Reality is suspended as we witness the soap drama of plucky and courageous little Britain (often misrepresented as England) taking on the might of the bureaucratic and soulless EU (conveniently reduced to bureaucrats in Brussels). In this grand tale of derring-do, Ireland and particularly Northern Ireland has a walk-on part; this time in a spoiler role. As before we are experiencing... Читать дальше...

The evil of social media - James Calvert

Times of Malta

It’s not often football-related news makes my blood boil. But last week I read a story that made me wall-punchingly livid. This incredulous tale revolves around a 13-year-old Fulham fan called Rhys Porter who suffers from cerebral palsy and epilepsy. Despite his disability, Rhys loves his football and plays as a goalkeeper. He recently posted videos of himself making saves on social media. But instead of giving the boy the support and encouragement he deserves, sick trolls decided it was appropriate to mock and abuse him. Читать дальше...

Two of the men - the 47-year-old and the 85-year-old went to the nearest health centre where the younger man was certified to be suffering from grievous injuries, the older one from slight. The police are investigating. Читать дальше...

Editorial: Shock will not resolve anything

Times of Malta

The arraignment of a contractor who allegedly dumped his own migrant worker on the roadside, after he was badly injured doing his job, sparked shock and condemnation. But, in reality, this savage act comes as no surprise. It merely confirms the ruthlessness of a society which is prepared to exploit anyone and anything at the altar of money. It confirms the commodification of people, especially the more vulnerable we treat as “inferior beings”. But before the story of Jaiteh Lamin is destined to... Читать дальше...

Caring for our common home

Times of Malta

A year ago today, Pope Francis published his third encyclical, entitled Fratelli Tutti (We are all brothers and sisters). It speaks about fraternity and social friendship, which the Pope indicates as the ways to build a more just and peaceful world, with the contribution of all. The encyclical represents a new call for a profound conversion and a radical change in the way we live. St Francis of Assisi, whose feast we celebrate tomorrow, is the pope’s main source of inspiration, as Pope Francis himself explains... Читать дальше...

Baby worship, anyone?

Times of Malta

Today’s readings: Genesis 2:18-24; Hebrews 2:9-11; Mark 10:2-16 In his fascinating short essay ‘In Defence of Baby Worship’, the British author and Catholic convert G. K. Chesterton gives us some good reasons why children are our best teachers. The “influence of children” as they stand in awe of everything that crosses their gaze, says Chesterton, “forces us actually to remodel our conduct in accordance with the revolutionary theory of the marvellousness of all things”. For Chesterton, children... Читать дальше...

Moving to flexitime – Stephanie Mizzi

Times of Malta

When COVID-19 hit our islands back in March 2020 many companies switched to remote working where possible. Eighteen months on, and given it was proven successful, remote working is still being implemented by many companies. While some have returned to working from their offices, many have opted for hybrid working. With the implementation of hybrid working many offices are going a step further with the introduction of flexitime. The web defines flexitime as a working schedule granting employees... A new era for motorsports in Malta

Times of Malta

It appears that some dreams do come true. We, in the motorsport and racing community, have been advocating the need for the creation of a dedicated, multipurpose motorsport facility for years. Now, it is finally happening. Ħal Far will boast a facility that will not only meet our needs but also be capable of hosting international events. The hub will be the only homologated motorsports complex in Europe, encompassing a circuit racing track, a drag racing track and a karting track. We are confident it will be impressive in every way. Bernard Grech: Malta voting PN would be like 1987 all over again

Times of Malta

Bernard Grech marks one year as Nationalist Party leader this weekend. He spoke to Bertrand Borg about the party’s view of big business and development, the changes he’d like to see in Malta’s political system and why he thinks a PN electoral victory will be an FATF gamechanger.  If you compare the polls when you became leader to those of today, they’re pretty much the same if not worse. What’s going on? Why aren’t the people responding? Well, we’ve made advances. Our message is not reaching people enough. Читать дальше...

His name is Jaiteh – Anna Marie Galea

Times of Malta

Sometimes you see something that you know will stay with you for a long time: the iconic image of the US Navy sailor kissing a nurse in Times Square at the end of World War II; the white flower arrangement on top of Princess Diana’s casket topped by a single stark envelope with “Mummy” written on it in childish, uneven lettering; the haunting photo of a Sudanese child looking starved and exhausted with a vulture seemingly waiting for the opportunity to pounce on her tired body. And this week, an image of a man in a red... Читать дальше...
