Perfect Napoli re-take top spot as Juventus beat Roma

Times of Malta

Napoli returned to the top of Serie A on Sunday after Nigerian international Victor Osimhen scored the only goal in a hard-fought 1-0 win against Torino. AC Milan had moved to the top of the table after battling back from two goals down to beat Hellas Verona 3-2 at the San Siro on Saturday. But Napoli moved back to the summit after Osimhen, who had scored for his country in a 2-0 win against the Central African Republic in World Cup qualifying last week, headed the 81st-minute winner. 10-man Santa Lucia hold Mosta to draw

Times of Malta

Dexter Xuereb’s late equaliser earned Santa Lucia a draw in stormy encounter with Mosta. The Blues looked on course for victory after they received fresh impetus when Jurgen Pisani was sent off following a clash with Tyrone Farrugia in the 52nd minute. The dismissal gave Mario Muscat’s men renewed hope but Xuereb cheered a brave Santa Lucia side with a 90-minute leveller. The game needed one side to take the initiative after a dour opening period and Mosta seized that advantage. They went in front... Читать дальше...

Spurs spoil Newcastle’s Saudi party

Times of Malta

Newcastle’s new dawn under the ownership of the Saudi sovereign wealth fund got off to a disappointing start as Tottenham silenced St James’ Park with a 3-2 win on Sunday. The defeat leaves Newcastle still in the relegation zone without a Premier League win this season. Expectations on Tyneside are high for a huge injection of funding by the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) to transform Newcastle’s fortunes on the field. Stretched architects and box-ticking planners: Malta’s architectural challenges

Times of Malta

The role of the perit is changing, Peter and Sandro Valentino, co-founders of Valentino Architects, claim.  They point out that, traditionally, the architect’s role was all-encompassing because buildings were significantly less complicated but, today, buildings are more complex to deliver. This makes their role much more difficult and might even impinge on the quality of their output. “Architects are now expected to cope with design, planning permission, structural engineering, site supervision... A class reunion with a difference

Times of Malta

Sixteen of the old boys of the Lyceum class of 1974 got together last week, but this was not a typical reunion. The get-together was planned to go visit one of their classmates who has developed a severe case of ALS. Joe Debono, a well-known media personality, was one of the organisers of previous get-togethers, so it was only right that he be the centre of this one. The reunion, organised by Henry Zammit Cordina, also collected the sum of €750 that was presented to Joe, to be passed on to ALS Malta. Читать дальше...

Fontanella hat-trick brings Valletta back to winning ways

Times of Malta

Valletta returned to winning ways yesterday as a Mario Fontanella hat-trick handed them a 3-1 win over Sirens. An early goal paved the way for the Citizens but Sirens gave a good account of themselves and had their fair share of scoring opportunities, including a penalty which was neutralised by goalkeeper Alessandro Guarnone. Valletta coach Tose Mendes made wholesale changes following the defeat to Gudja. With Ryan Camilleri and Joseph Zerafa ruled out through suspension, Rowen Muscat, who was... Читать дальше...

The incident took place on Thursday night in the outskirts of the eastern town of Montbeliard. "It has been confirmed that one of the men tried to present a health pass that did not match his identity," the public prosecutor for the area, Ariane Combarel, told AFP. The pair then left the scene only to return a short while later in a car... Читать дальше...

Home education association ‘ignored’ by government

Times of Malta

The government’s home-schooling plans have not gone down well with the association representing families opting for this saying it is “greatly disappointed” that its offers to cooperate in drafting the related law were ignored.  The Malta Home Education Association’s main bone of contention concerns the prerequisite of a teacher’s warrant for parents and guardians to home-school their children, as the education act, that came into force this month, stipulates. In a letter to Education Minister Justyne Caruana... Читать дальше...

West Ham's Ogbonna sinks Everton on Moyes' return

Times of Malta

West Ham manager David Moyes enjoyed a winning return to Everton as Angelo Ogbonna’s header sealed a 1-0 victory at Goodison Park on Sunday. Moyes spent 11 years in charge of the Merseyside club from 2002 to 2013 and is still regarded fondly by Everton fans. But his relationship with Everton’s current boss Rafael Benitez is less cordial after the Spaniard irritated Moyes by labelling the Toffees a small club during his time at Liverpool. Notary Ivan Barbara’s widow appeals inquiry order

Times of Malta

The widow of notary Ivan Barbara, whose clients were left chasing their money, has appealed a magistrate’s decision for an inquiry into possible misappropriation and fraud, saying she was extraneous to her husband’s dealings.  Rosanne Barbara Zarb, who renounced her husband’s inheritance, said the clients had not proved the link between her and the notary’s alleged wrongdoing. The only link, she said, was that she had been married to him.  She has asked the court to revoke a decree by Magistrate... Читать дальше...

A closer look into the work of Luigi Calamatta (1801-1869)

Times of Malta

After 200 years since Napoleon Bonaparte’s death, it is still difficult to determine what his face really looked like. Portrait of engraver Luigi Calamatta by Ingres, 1828. Numerous sculptures, paintings and engravings are so diverse that to obtain the best data one is tempted to rely on his death mask. Yet this is equally problematic; the various masks from Napoleon’s deathbed on May 5, 1821, not only diverge in diminutive details but also demonstrate immense anatomical differences. A recent... Growing demand for Microsoft tech, but specialised knowledge remains low

Times of Malta

Most organisations are looking to Microsoft to adopt emerging technologies in cloud and software development, but there is a low adoption due to a lack of specialised resources, a study by eSkills Malta Foundation has found. The lack of specialised resources on the job market, according to the ‘Demand and Supply Monitor 2021’ study, is pushing organisations to assign certain key responsibilities, such as architecture and business analysis to existing ICT staff carrying other roles.  To address this skills gap... Pressure is growing admits Manchester United manager Solskjaer

Times of Malta

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted the pressure is building as the beleaguered boss questioned Manchester United’s desire after Saturday’s damaging 4-2 defeat at Leicester. Solskjaer will face renewed scrutiny after United’s collapse at the King Power Stadium left them without a win in their last three Premier League games. “The whole performance was not good enough with and without the ball,” Solskjaer said. The United manager saw Mason Greenwood open the scoring early on, only for Leicester’s Youri Tielemans to equalise before half-time. Читать дальше...

UK minister takes aim at European rights court

Times of Malta

Britain's justice minister on Sunday laid out his plans to reform key rights legislation to stop the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) from "dictating" to the UK. Justice Secretary Dominic Raab said in an interview with The Sunday Telegraph that the ECHR was imposing too many "obligations on the state". The UK Human Rights Act passed in 1998 incorporates the European Convention on Human Rights into UK law. This was not directly impacted by Brexit as neither the Convention nor the court are part of the EU. Читать дальше...

‘Robert Abela’s legacy? A future of debt’ - Bernard Grech

Times of Malta

Prime Minister Robert Abela’s legacy will be the future of debt he is leaving children, Opposition leader Bernard Grech said on Sunday.  Addressing supporters during a political activity in Balzan, a day before his reply to the Budget in Parliament, Grech said last Monday’s two-hour speech showed that the government has no strategy or sense of direction for the future.  “It is now clear that the budget's sole vision for the future is debt. That is the legacy of our Prime Minister Robert Abela and his government will leave behind. Читать дальше...
