Mbong hands champions Ħamrun vital win

A second-half goal by Joseph Mbong was enough for Ħamrun Spartans to put daylight between them and Sirens in the Premier League. Heading into this game, the defending champions were sixth on nine points but have now reached the 12-point mark, leapfrogging Sirens who were third on 11 points before this encounter. This was a much-needed victory for the Spartans to keep their hopes of defending last year’s title on track, especially since they will clash with Hibernians immediately after the international window. Verona’s in-form Simeone condemns Juve to another loss

Giovanni Simeone struck twice as Verona beat Juventus 2-1 in Serie A on Saturday to hand Massimiliano’s struggling team a second loss in four days. Simeone, the son of Atletico Madrid coach Diego, put Verona ahead when he turned in a rebound at the Stadio Bentegodi on 11 minutes. From the bench: contesting VAT

On October 12, the Administrative Review Tribunal gave judgment on application 32/14 VG as filed by a company to contest the VAT estimates issued by the Director General (Value Added Tax), today the Commissioner for Tax. The DG (VAT) had estimated VAT dues and ordered the company to pay €15,812.74 in dues, together with a €3,162.55 administrative penalty and interests amounting to €7,527.31, for a total of €26,502.60. Cyclist grievously injured in Rabat collision

A 23-year old cyclist was grievously injured in Rabat on Saturday afternoon.  Police said the man, a Brazilian national, was involved in a collision with a car driven by a 57-year old Mġarr resident on Triq it-Tiġrija at around 2.20pm.  The cyclist was hospitalised for further treatment. Police investigations are ongoing. 

Chelsea extend lead as Liverpool held, Man. City beaten

Chelsea extended their lead at the top of the Premier League to three points as Reece James scored twice in a 3-0 win at Newcastle as Liverpool and Manchester City stumbled at home in the title race on Saturday. Liverpool blew at 2-0 lead at Anfield as Brighton battled back to earn a deserved 2-2 draw. City are now five points off the top after Pep Guardiola’s 10 men were beaten 2-0 by Crystal Palace at the Etihad. G20 leaders approve multinationals tax but wrangle over climate

Leaders of the G20 world's major economies approved a global minimum tax on the largest companies on Saturday, but were still haggling over the pressing issue of climate change. In the first major announcement of the two-day G20 summit in Rome, the bloc endorsed a "historic" agreement that would see multinationals subject to a minimum 15 per cent tax, said US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, who attended the talks.  The deal would "end the damaging race to the bottom on corporate taxation", she said in a statement. Three killed as defiant Sudanese march against coup

Sudanese security forces on Saturday killed three protesters during mass anti-coup rallies, medics said, despite warnings from global powers who had urged the military to exercise restraint. "Two demonstrators were killed in the city of Omdurman by the putschist military council," the independent Central Committee of Sudan's Doctors said in a tweet, adding that one was shot in the head and the other in the stomach. A five-year-old Grade 1 student still has no clue who her teacher is because for the past four weeks her classroom has been headed by three different teachers. China cracks down over 'serious' COVID-19 outbreak

Beijing introduced new Covid-19 curbs on Saturday to stamp out a "serious" outbreak as the Chinese capital maintains its strict zero-tolerance policy, with less than 100 days before it hosts the Winter Olympics. China's leading epidemiologist Zhong Nanshan said Saturday that authorities could contain a nationwide outbreak within a month -- but also warned the "pandemic cannot be eradicated within a short period of time". Vaccine-only restaurants and events return to 'pre-COVID' distances from Monday

Restaurants and events will be allowed to go back to "pre-COVID" distances from Monday, as long as they restrict entry to a maximum of 300 vaccinated people.  Health Minister Chris Fearne had already announced the rules would change in November. Now, the latest mitigation measures by the government published on Saturday confirm the new rules come into force on Monday.  This means that for restaurants and seated events where entry is restricted to fully vaccinated patrons, social distancing will finally be a thing of the past. Boy, 16, hurt in fall from ladder in Żurrieq

A teenage boy was grievously hurt when he fell from a ladder at a garage in Żurrieq on Saturday morning.  The boy is 16 and from Syria but lives in Żurrieq. He was injured at a garage in Triq San Martin at around 10.30am, the police said in a statement.  Members of the Civil Protection Department were called to assist following the emergency call. Man escapes with minor injuries following roof collapse in Floriana

A 47-year old man walked safely out of a Floriana house on Saturday morning after the roof of the house collapsed while he was there. Police told Times of Malta that the man, who lives in Balzan, did not live at the Triq l-Iljun property and was there to inspect it. He was standing on the roof when part of it collapsed at around 1.20pm on Saturday, following days of heavy rainfall.  At no point was he buried under the rubble, police said.
