Morsi, Egypt's first freely elected president... Читать дальше...

A more lenient punishment for commercial drivers? No way, says road safety boss, cyclists

Times of Malta

Commercial drivers should be road safety ambassadors and not be given more room to break their driving obligations, according to the Malta Road Safety Council’s executive manager, Pierre Vella. He was reacting to comments made by the GRTU – Chamber of Small and Medium Enterprises about the traffic penalty point system, which has been extended to all drivers. Whereas before the beginning of this month it used to apply only to those who had just obtained their driving licence, all motorists now risk... Читать дальше...

Satisfy your curiosity this festive season

Times of Malta

TheatreAlice in WonderlandManoel Theatre When I sneaked into the Manoel Theatre last week, to get a sneak preview of Masquerade’s latest panto, I was pleasantly surprised by the changes made to the theatre auditorium itself, but all the more so by the incredible work that goes into staging this very seasonal entertainment staple. Very often audiences forget the large amount of time and effort, not to mention the patience that the cast, crew and creatives put into the development before presenting the finished product. A disaster year, for some

Times of Malta

The year 1992 had been so bad for the British monarchy that Queen Elizabeth had called it an annus horribilis. It is unlikely that President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca will use that term to describe 2017. But it was. Malta started the year with the presidency of the European Union, a hyped-up ceremonial post that became a damp squib when an unexpected snap election, called a year too early, took the island by storm. Away from the electoral programmes, a new vocabulary began to emerge, most especially on the social media. Читать дальше...

A strong year for stocks, but no joy for the dollar

Times of Malta

Markets are ending 2017 in a party mood after a pick-up in global growth boosted corporate profits and commodities, while tame inflation kept central banks from snatching away the punch bowl of easy monetary policy. MSCI’s world equity index, which tracks 47 countries, inched up 0.13 per cent, and was poised to add a 14th straight month of gains to put it at an all-time high. The index gained 22 per cent for the year. Emerging markets have led the charge with gains of 34 per cent. Hong Kong surged 36 per cent... Читать дальше...

With line-up widening, Apple depends less on iPhone X

Times of Malta

In years past, demand for Apple Inc.’s latest flagship phone was critical to the company’s results over the holiday shopping quarter. That dynamic might be changing, however, as Apple’s widening line-up of devices and services more than makes up for any tepidness in demand this quarter for its lead product, the $999 iPhone X. On Tuesday, Apple’s stock fell 2.5 per cent to $170.57 after Taiwan’s Economic Daily and several analysts suggested that iPhone X sales in the fiscal first quarter would be 30 million units...
