Times of Malta

The leadership of the Miss America Organisation has resigned, sweeping out officials implicated in an email scandal that targeted past pageant winners for abuse based on their appearance, intellect and sex lives. CEO Sam Haskell resigned from the group, based in Atlantic City, New Jersey, a day after he was suspended by the board. Also on Saturday, the organisation's president Josh Randle and chairman Lynn Weidner resigned. The internal emails include name-calling, slut-shaming and fat-shaming of... Читать дальше...

Defeat for Murty and Rangers, Celtic stretch lead

Times of Malta

Graeme Murty's first match as a permanent Rangers boss ended in a 2-1 Ladbrokes Premiership defeat at Kilmarnock, while Celtic extended their lead to eight points with a 3-0 home win over Aberdeen. Having been handed the reins until the end of the season, Murty was hoping to boost his chances of a longer stay in the Ibrox hotseat by avoiding the kind of slip-ups his side suffered against Hamilton, Dundee and St Johnstone during his nine-game caretaker stint. And it was looking positive as Declan... Читать дальше...

A glorified EU talking shop or an effective civil society tool?

Times of Malta

Abolishing roaming charges across the EU was arguably a milestone decision by Brussels, heralding more affordable mobile phone calls and internet usage to millions of European travellers. Many were keen to jump onto the bandwagon of this success story, but one European entity prides itself on setting the ball rolling to raise awareness and lobby in favour of ditching roaming charges. That is the European Economic and Social Committee. In layman's terms, it brings together social partner representatives at the EU level. Читать дальше...

Times of Malta

Macedonia's left-wing prime minister has said he is ready to renounce his country's claim to the legacy of Alexander the Great to help solve a 26-year-old dispute with neighbouring Greece over the country's name. Zoran Zaev, who has been in power since the spring, said: "I give up (the claim) of Macedonia being the sole heir to Alexander. The history belongs not only to us, but also to Greece and many other countries." Since its independence from Yugoslavia in 1991, Macedonia (officially called The... Читать дальше...

Ronaldo vs Messi - in focus

Times of Malta

Cristiano Ronaldo may have beaten his fierce rival to the Ballon d'Or this year but on the pitch Lionel Messi is dominant as he helps Barcelona streak well clear of Real Madrid in the LaLiga title race. Messi scored a penalty to reach 17 goals against Real - a league record - but he was not the stand-out performer, while Ronaldo certainly endured another off-day by his usual lofty standards. Here, Press Association Sport looks at how the two players considered the world's best fared in El Clasico on Saturday. Читать дальше...

Tax departments to merge... after an 11-year wait

Times of Malta

It has been pending for 11 years but it seems the merger of the three tax collection departments might finally become a reality in 2018, according to a report published by the National Audit Office. The merger of the Inland Revenue, VAT and Customs departments was first mooted in 2006, when a working group was set up to see how best to structure the new entity. The merger is aimed at avoiding duplication but also to share information that would give a much clearer picture ofoverall activity and, hence... Читать дальше...

Hamsik beats Maradona's Napoli goals record in win over Sampdoria

Times of Malta

Marek Hamsik surpassed Diego Maradona's long-standing goalscoring record for Napoli as the Azzurri pulled clear at the top of the Serie A table. The Slovakia midfielder, who scored the first of his 116 goals for Napoli in August 2007, fired what proved to be the winner in a topsy-turvy 3-2 triumph over Europa League-chasing Sampdoria. Gaston Ramirez had put Samp ahead at the San Paolo, with Fabio Quagliarella restoring their lead from the penalty spot after Allan had equalised. Lorenzo Insigne levelled... Читать дальше...

Record visitors to museums but numbers don't reflect tourist arrivals

Times of Malta

The surge in tourist arrivals this year was not reflected in the number of people visiting museums and heritage sites, according to Heritage Malta, despite a record year in attendances. Acting chief executive Noel Zammit said that while he was satisfied with the record number of visitors to Heritage Malta sites, the increase was not proportional to the increase in tourist arrivals. “This means that, at face value, we could have done better,” he said. “It could be a matter of marketing, or the quality and type of tourist... Everton, Chelsea share spoils in goalless stalemate

Times of Malta

Sam Allardyce's unbeaten run as Everton manager continued as Chelsea were held to a goalless draw at Goodison Park. A sixth game without defeat - four wins and two draws since it was revealed Allardyce would be the new boss - shows the resilience he has instilled in a previously struggling side. It was gritty, far from pretty but ultimately effective and it was celebrated like a victory at the final whistle as Chelsea, who had scored 10 times in their previous three visits, were frustrated in their... Suarez and Messi settle 'Clasico' as Barca race 14 points clear

Times of Malta

Barcelona moved 14 points clear of Real Madrid in LaLiga as three second-half goals wrapped up a convincing 3-0 victory at the Estadio Bernabeu. Zinedine Zidane's men had the better of a tight first period but Barcelona took control in the second and Luis Suarez swept home the opener before a Lionel Messi penalty took the game beyond Real. It was a strange spot-kick award by referee Jose Maria Sanchez Martinez, who could simply have awarded a goal rather than a penalty after Dani Carvajal handled... Читать дальше...
