The most common reason cited by the Maltese for failing to report corruption is they feel they would lack protection, a new Eurobarometer survey shows. The finding comes despite the existence of the Protection of the Whistleblower Act introduced in 2013 and intended to provide safety to anyone who wants to raise the alarm on acts of corruption in the workplace. The survey examined perceptions of corruption across all 28 EU Member States. Just over half of Maltese respondents said they would report a case of corruption if they came across one. The government should question the ulterior motives of those who oppose granting conservation warrants which have been in the pipeline for over 15 years, conservator James Licari has said. “Conservation and restoration are scientific professions, and a legal warrant would not only allow this profession the dignity it deserves but would protect our cultural heritage from amateur work,” the president of the Malta Association of Professional Conservator-Restorers (MAPCo-Re) told this newspaper. A Customs Department clampdown on contraband continued in November when 43,340 cigarettes and 3.8kg of tobacco products were seized. The department said on Sunday that its inspectors raided 50 shops, three homes or garages and eight markets and also searched a car. Plans for soldiers to patrol the streets in criminal hotspots have raised concerns among experts and observers, who stressed the clear line in a democracy between the roles of the military and police forces. Lebanese security forces fired tear gas and water cannon at protesters near the US Embassy in Lebanon on Sunday during a demonstration against President Donald Trump's decision to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. Protesters, some of them waving the Palestinian flag, set fires in the street and threw projectiles towards the security forces who had barricaded the main road leading to the US embassy in the Awkar area north of Beirut in the Awkar area.
