‘Lack of protection’ fuels fear of filing corruption reports

Times of Malta

The most common reason cited by the Maltese for failing to report corruption is they feel they would lack protection, a new Eurobarometer survey shows. The finding comes despite the existence of the Protection of the Whistleblower Act introduced in 2013 and intended to provide safety to anyone who wants to raise the alarm on acts of corruption in the workplace. The survey examined perceptions of corruption across all 28 EU Member States. Just over half of Maltese respondents said they would report a case of corruption if they came across one. Conservators question opposition to warrant

Times of Malta

The government should question the ulterior motives of those who oppose granting conservation warrants which have been in the pipeline for over 15 years, conservator James Licari has said. “Conservation and restoration are scientific professions, and a legal warrant would not only allow this profession the dignity it deserves but would protect our cultural heritage from amateur work,” the president of the Malta Association of Professional Conservator-Restorers (MAPCo-Re) told this newspaper. Manchester City moved 11 points clear at the top of the Premier League after a 2-1 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford in their derby clash on Sunday. City have become the first team to win 14 consecutive English top-flight games in the same season. Their victory ended United's run of 40 home games unbeaten in all competitions. Updated: Rooney scores as Everton hold Liverpool

Times of Malta

Everton captain Wayne Rooney scored for the first time in a Merseyside derby on Sunday with a late penalty to take an unlikely point in a 1-1 draw against Liverpool at Anfield. With the snow swirling, Rooney sent the 77th-minute spot kick straight down the middle after Dominic Calvert-Lewin went down following a push in the back by Croatian defender Dejan Lovren. Mohamed Salah had earlier fired Liverpool ahead with a 42nd-minute stunner that sent the Egyptian clear of Tottenham Hotspur's England... Читать дальше...

Fiorentina frustrate Napoli

Times of Malta

Napoli missed the opportunity to return to the top of the Serie A table as they were held to a goalless home draw by Fiorentina. After leaders Inter Milan and third-placed Juventus shared the same scoreline on Saturday evening, a win for Napoli would have seen them leapfrog Inter but they could not make a breakthrough against a dogged Fiorentina team. The visitors actually had the best chances. Giovanni Simeone had the ball in the net but his effort was ruled out for offside before the Argentinian then squandered a one-on-one chance. Eating healthy this Christmas

Times of Malta

We have all heard the statement: “You are what you eat.” However, as research shows, you are not only what you eat, but you eat what you see. This is especially evident around Christmastime when many people increase the number of occasions to eat with family and friends, party and dine out. Christmas is a wonderful time to meet up with family, workmates and old friends in a social environment. However, these events usually include food and drink. More often than not, the food served is not really in line with healthy eating guidelines... Читать дальше...

Giroud rescues point for Arsenal

Times of Malta

Second half substitute Olivier Giroud rescued Arsenal with a late equaliser on Sunday after Southampton had looked like taking all three points in a 1-1 draw at St Mary's. France international Giroud, who came off the bench in the 72nd minute to replace compatriot Alexandre Lacazette, made it 1-1 in the 88th with a glancing header into the bottom right corner. Until then Arsenal had been staring at a second successive league defeat, after a stinging 3-1 loss to Manchester United at the Emirates last weekend. Читать дальше...

Soldiers doing police work -'unhealthy in a democracy'

Times of Malta

Plans for soldiers to patrol the streets in criminal hotspots have raised concerns among experts and observers, who stressed the clear line in a democracy between the roles of the military and police forces. Home Affairs Minister Michael Farrugia announced on Friday that armed forces personnel could be deployed in areas such as Marsa, Birżebbuġa, St Paul’s Bay and Paceville next year. The measure comes amid longstanding safety concerns from residents in the areas and has been positioned by the government... Читать дальше...

Malta’s 1788 Magna Carta for unborn life

Times of Malta

It was left to Bishop Vincenzo Labini to fire the last salvo against abortion before Napoleon booted the Order out of Malta. Labini, the last non-Maltese bishop of Malta, enjoyed the reputation of a liberal and is said to have sided with the French revolutionary invaders against the Order. Yet his edict of June 14, 1788, elaborate, inordinately long, erudite, passionate and perhaps slightly hysterical, is the Magna Carta in the defence of unborn life. It was printed as a broadsheet at the government... Читать дальше...
