German SPD to start talks with Merkel next week if members agree

The leader of Germany's Social Democrats (SPD) said on Monday he would launch talks with Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservatives on forming a government next week if members of his centre-left party gave him the green light at a congress this weekend. Electrogas plant catered for half of Malta's energy needs between May and October

The new Electrogas power station generated electricity for just over half of Malta's energy needs between May and October. Energy Minister Joe Mizzi told Marlene Farrugia (PD) in reply to a parliamentary question on Monday that between May 1 and October 30, Delimara IV (Electrogas) produced 53% of the power needs, the interconnector supplied 27% and Delimara III (BWSC) 20%. Bus catches fire in Valletta terminus

No one was hurt when a route bus caught fire at the Valletta terminus on Monday morning The blaze appears to have started from the engine compartment at the back of the bus and spread quickly, causing extensive damage. Woman hit by motorcycle

A 53-year-old woman was seriously injured this afternoon when she was hit by a motorcycle while crossing Fleur-de-Lys Road, Sta Venera. The accident happened at about 4pm. The police said the motorcycle was being driven by a 60-year-old man from Birzebbuġa.

Argentina's Lionel Messi is used to being hacked down by desperate defenders but his statue in Buenos Aires has suffered even rougher treatment for the second time this year. The Barcelona forward's bronze sculpture on Paseo de la Gloria was vandalised on Monday, chopped off at the ankles with the body left on the pavement. Giants fire coach McAdoo, GM Reese

The New York Giants fired second-year head coach Ben McAdoo in a housecleaning on Monday morning, less than a week after the benching of quarterback Eli Manning created a backlash from fans. The Giants also fired general manager Jerry Reese, who becomes the first GM known to be let go in-season by the team. Caruana Galizia family hits out at the way it was informed of arrests

The family of Daphne Caruana Galizia said the manner in which Monday’s arrests were communicated to it indicated "serious institutional deficiencies which are cause for general public concern". Sexual harassment judgement confirmed

A man who was fined €2,000 after being found guilty of sexually harassing a female employee at the workplace, has had his punishment confirmed on appeal by a court which declared that the man had taken advantage of the woman’s ‘fragility and vulnerability.’ The 62-year old offender was prosecuted for having used inappropriate language and attempted several unwanted sexual advances in respect of the woman and her sister who were both his subordinates. MSE Equity Price Index drops to over 2-year low

The MSE Equity Price Index tumbled by 0.94% to 4,382.024 points today – the lowest level since November 2015 – largely driven by the notable declines in the share prices of BOV (-2.7%) and HSBC (-3.2%) which outweighed the gains in RS2 (+1.3%) and MIDI (+1.4%). Bank of Valletta plc shed 2.7% to the €1.751 level across 95,836 shares. Man used wife's private medical data to try get marriage annulled

An employee of Gozo General Hospital has been found not guilty of having breaching data protection laws when he obtained information on the mental health of his estranged wife and presented this in annulment proceedings before the Ecclesiastical Tribunal. Brothers are key suspects in Caruana Galizia murder

Two brothers, Alfred and George Degiorgio, are the main suspects in the investigation into the murder of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia. The Degiorgio brothers are among a group of 10 men arrested during a large-scale police operation on Monday morning. President kicks off 'Orange Campaign'

The annual fund-raising 'Orange Campaign' by the University's Theology students got unerdway today. The students sell juice made from fresh oranges to raise funds for charity in the run-up to Christmas The campaign has been held for the past 15 years. President Marie-Louise Coleiro was present for the launch this morning, and praised the students for their work. She also praised them for the focus in this year's campaign on  Dar Hosea, which shelters women wanting to get out of prostitution.

UK company to provide electronic counting system for Malta elections

Idox Elections of the UK has been selected by the Electoral Commission as the official provider of an Electronic Vote Counting Solution to support elections   during the 2019-2024 period. Air Malta returns to Lisbon on March 25

Air Malta said today that its new service to Lisbon will start on March 25. Flights will be operated on Thursdays and Sundays. One way prices start from  Euro39 includes taxes. Tourism Minister Konrad Mizzi said that this route would allow Air Malta to be connected to the South American region since Lisbon is an important hub for South American passengers travelling to European countries.
