Hosts Al Jazira edged past Asian champions Urawa Red Diamonds 1-0 in Abu Dhabi on Saturday to set up a Club World Cup semi-final clash with favourites Real Madrid. The Japanese side had 65 percent possession but it was Ali Mabkhout who scored the winner seven minutes after halftime in the first all-Asian clash for a final four spot since 2010. Paris St Germain shrugged off two consecutive defeats to beat Lille 3-1 in Ligue 1 on Saturday and open a 12-point lead at the top of the standings. Times of Malta

Nationalist MP Jason Azzopardi filed a police report on Saturday night claiming he had been tailed by two suspicious cars. Contacted after posting a tweet, the lawyer said he had enough suspicion to believe he was being followed earlier in the day when he was meant to have a meeting with a client in Qrendi. Around 12.15pm, Dr Azzopardi said he realised there was a white car in pursuit, with another grey vehicle at a distance. At one point he stopped his vehicle close to the St Matthew chapel to make... Times of Malta

BALZAN            1 Alves 90 HIBERNIANS   0 Alex Alves scored an injury-time winner as Balzan edged Hibernians to go three points clear at the top of the Premier League standings. On 35 minutes Hibs midfielder Dunstan Vella slalomed past two defenders before picking up Johann Bezzina who fired wide. Balzan’s response arrived a minute from the break when Cadu showed great pace to move past his marker but his thumping drive flew just wide. Читать дальше...

Real faced a crisis in defence with Raphael Varane, captain Sergio Ramos, Dani Carvajal and holding midfielder Casemiro all unavailable but Zinedine Zidane's side produced a lethal attacking display, scoring all their goals before halftime. Lacklustre Bayern beat Eintracht to stretch lead

Times of Malta

Bayern Munich struggled to a scrappy 1-0 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga on Saturday but it was still enough to stretch their lead to eight points and make sure they will stay top when the winter break starts this month. The German champions, who showed none of the spark that saw them beat Paris St Germain 3-1 in the Champions League on Tuesday, needed an Arturo Vidal header in the 20th minute to edge past the hard-working hosts, who have the league's second-best defence. Victory moved Bayern eight points clear of RB Leipzig... Читать дальше...

United States of Europe? No thanks, German conservatives tell social democrats

Times of Malta

Senior members of German Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservatives on Saturday rejected the vision for a United States of Europe put forward by the Social Democrats (SPD), with whom they are hoping to form a governing coalition. SPD leader Martin Schulz said on Thursday his party, which suffered its worst post-war election result in September, would only gain support by providing a clear vision of Europe, and called for a "United States of Europe" by 2025. Merkel's conservatives, who lost voters to... Читать дальше...

West Ham defeat champions Chelsea

Times of Malta

Marko Arnautovic's first West Ham goal secured a 1-0 victory over Chelsea and a first win for manager David Moyes. Arnautovic struck after only six minutes to condemn the champions to a first defeat in seven Premier League matches. The £24million club-record signing was jeered by home fans earlier in the season after some below-par displays, but he looks a player reborn under Moyes. In fact West Ham look an entirely different side to the shambles they appeared towards the end of Slaven Bilic's spell in charge. Читать дальше...

Human rights defenders in Malta being 'threatened and harassed'

Times of Malta

Many human rights defenders in Malta are bullied, harassed, insulted, threatened and stigmatised, activists warned on Saturday. "We are not satisfied that our concerns are being taken seriously by the competent authorities, especially in view of the fact that we are often victims of hatred perpetuated by those entities responsible for our protection," the Aditus Foundation said. By tolerating this ongoing abuse, Malta is not only offending the principles that human rights embody – equality, non-discrimination... Читать дальше...

Replace Marsa power station with a park, mayor suggests

Times of Malta

Marsa mayor Frans Debono suggested that a park would be a suitable replacement for the Marsa power station. “A park would make a lot of sense, and it is something that has been missing from the community for some time,” he said. The last remaining two chimneys of the Marsa power station were brought down on Thursday. In total, five chimneys were pulled down after the power station became defunct in 2015 and fully disconnected earlier this year. Insisting the area has great potential, Mr Debono said... Specific Panama data on both Schembri, Mizzi offered to Maltese authorities

Local authorities have been given access to specific Panama Papers data about the Prime Minister’s chief of staff Keith Schembri and Tourism Minister Konrad Mizzi. German authorities said in July they had the data and were willing to share it with other countries. Süddeutsche Zeitung journalist Bastian Obermayer told the Times of Malta the German police had actually offered the data to the local authorities, rather than  being requested it by Malta. The data should offer insight into Mr Schembri's... Читать дальше...

What a dump at Balluta Bay

Times of Malta

Balluta Bay is one of Malta's most eye-catching addresses. But judging by this photo, some local businesses are not too bothered about keeping up that reputation. A photo sent in by a Times of Malta reader shows the pitiful state a pavement close to the promenade is in, with rubbish strewn around a recycling bring-in site.  "How can this be allowed? This is a weekly occurrence. What a disgrace," fumed the reader, who blamed local cafes and restaurants for indiscriminately dumping rubbish on the curb. Читать дальше...

Implication that State was ''complicit' in Caruana Galizia's murder lambasted by government

Times of Malta

The Maltese government loudly rejected the "implication" made by a UK law firm that it was somehow complicit in the killing of Daphne Caruana Galizia. A UK law firm's conclusion that the investigation into Ms Caruana Galizia's murder violates the European Convention on Human Rights is "one-sided", "unethical" and "a huge insult to the Maltese courts," the government said on Saturday.  "The undertone of the so-called ‘Urgent Advice’ is that the State was itself involved in the murder of Daphne Caruana... UK law firm's 'huge insult' draws government's ire

Times of Malta

A UK law firm's conclusion that the investigation into Daphne Caruana Galizia's murder violates the European Convention on Human Rights is "one sided", "unethical" and "a huge insult to the Maltese courts," the government said on Saturday.  "The undertone of the so-called ‘Urgent Advice’ is that the State was itself involved in the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia and on this basis it is argued that practically no Maltese authority should be involved in the investigation," it said in its statement.
