Marsa councillors made suggestions on ways to stop the exploitation of migrants and ease pressures on their hometown when they met members of the parliamentary Social Affairs Committee and Family Affairs Committee on Wednesday. The committees were discussing the 'ghettoisation' of migrants in Marsa. Marsa Deputy Mayor Josef Azzopardi said that many of those who congregated in Marsa in the mornings did not hold Maltese work permits. A stunning strike by Romarinho gave local side Al Jazira a 1-0 win over Oceania champions Auckland City in their Club World Cup preliminary match on Wednesday despite being outplayed by the New Zealanders. Daphne was not investigating any of the murder suspects - sister

Daphne Caruana Galizia was not investigating any of the ten suspects who were arrested last Monday as part of investigations into her murder, her sister Corrine Vella said in a statement this evening in reaction to media claims. Three of the arrested men were arraigned on Tuesday and accused of the murder. MDA wants to oversee new registry of approved contractors, developers

A register of developers working in Malta will soon be set up, and the construction lobby wants to manage it. Malta Developers’ Association president Sandro Chetcuti said work was under way on the finalisation of a register of “approved” developers and contractors, and that this would most likely be overseen by the MDA. “We have been working with the authorities on this for a while now, and the idea is that all those who want to work in this industry should be registered to avoid cowboys giving everyone else a bad name,” Mr Chetcuti said. The parliamentary secretary responsible for local councils, Silvio Parnis, was unable to say in parliament this evening whether the new Roads Authority would take over responsibility for residential roads from local councils. The minister was asked to clarify the point in repeated questions by Nationalist MPs Chris Said and Robert Cutajar in reaction to recent comments by Roads Minister Ian Borg. Maltese woman lands aircraft in Antarctica

Denise Grech, a Maltese airline pilot, has landed a Boeing B757 airliner on a blue ice runway in Novolazarevskaya, a Russian station in Antarctica. The station is used to ferry scientists from 11 countries throughout the Antarctic region known as the Dronning Maud Land. The aircraft, registered in Malta, is operated by JetMagic Ltd, a Sliema-based company which claims on its website to operate a fleet of aircraft for VIPs and heads of state.

Woman finds her family after 40 years of separation

A 40-year-old woman who had been taken from her mother at birth in Argentina has been reunited with relatives. The woman, Adriana, and her relatives were reunited by the human rights organisation Grandmothers of the Plaza de Mayo. She is the 126th child found by the grandmothers, who campaign for victims of the Dirty War. Marsa power station's last two chimneys to be demolished on Thursday

Enemalta will be demolishing the last two concrete chimneys of the Marsa Power Station on Thursday. The demolition will begin early in the morning, weather permitting.  Roads leading to the power station site will be temporarily closed and no one will be allowed to get close to the power station site.
