US President Donald Trump said on Saturday that actions by his disgraced former national security adviser Michael Flynn during the presidential transition were lawful and said that there was no collusion between his 2016 White House campaign and Russia. Justice Minister Owen Bonnici met with Italian politician and former anti-corruption prosecutor Antonio di Pietro today, ahead of a civil society demonstration to be held on Sunday.  Mr di Pietro, who became a household name as the front man of Italy's 'clean hands' campaign to battle the mafia in the 1990s, is in Malta to speak at the rally, which is being organised by the Civil Society Network.  In a statement, the Justice Ministry said the two men discussed "various issues related to the Maltese and Italian judicial systems". The streets of the capital have to be rid of all heavy machinery by the end of the month as the city gears up to assume the role of European Capital of Culture in January, with developers given a fortnight to remove all equipment. This also includes the removal of all tower cranes on construction sites, including those at the MCP car park in Floriana, this newspaper is informed. Workers have been caught on camera knocking down parts of Villa St Ignatius, just days after residents went public with calls to protect the historic Balluta landmark.  Footage shot on Saturday afternoon shows two workmen on the roof of the historic building, hacking at the masonry and knocking entire bricks down to the ground.  Residents who contacted the Planning Authority and police told Times of Malta that workers laid down their tools and left the building after being ordered to do so by a case... Two goals from Eden Hazard and one by Alvaro Morata earned Chelsea a workmanlike 3-1 Premier League victory over Newcastle United on Saturday. Malta is hardly known for its neat and tidy pavements, but this stretch of sidewalk in Birkirkara is astounding even by local standards.  A Times of Malta reader took this photo of a pavement on Triq Ħal Qormi a few days ago.   The photo shows rubbish bags, sacks, cardboard boxes and polystyrene waste all vying for space around a barrel of tile offcuts. The rubbish pile-up appears to have encouraged pedestrian litterbugs, with empty chocolate wrappers, cigarette packets and water bottles dumped nearby. Читать дальше...

An MEP delegation which noted a "perception of impunity" during a fact-finding visit to Malta had further added to people's worries about the rule of law, Nationalist Party leader Adrian Delia said on Saturday.  The delegation, Dr Delia noted, had ostensibly come to Malta to set the European Parliament's mind at ease about the situation in the country. Updated 2.30pm - Added video Air Malta management has blamed its massive losses on a fuel hedging agreement, but believes the airline will break even in just four months time. Tourism Minister Konrad Mizzi confirmed a Times of Malta report that the airline had gone from around a €4 million annual loss to a whopping €13.1 million loss last year. Malta needs less cars not more roads to reduce the traffic problem, Alternattiva Demokratika has said. Speaking at a news conference in Attard, where a controversial new road is being planned, AD chairman Carmel Cacopardo said the new development would eat up agricultural land.  "This proves that not only does the government have no plan to resolve the traffic problem but it doesn't care about agriculture," he said, pointing out that a number of farmers actually relied on the land in question. A pressure group has condemned Keith Schembri's refusal to meet a visiting cross-party MEP delegation alone, saying he had a duty to speak out and answer questions. #OccupyJustice was referring to a controversial visit by MEPs on Friday probing Malta's rule of law. Mr Schembri was present for the same meeting with the Prime Minister at Auberge de Castille but refused to meet the parliamentarians separately as they had requested.
