Train derails on inaugural trip in Washington state, six dead

An Amtrak passenger train derailed on Monday during its inaugural run along a faster route through Washington state, sending part of the train crashing down onto a major highway and killing six passengers, authorities said. The derailment caused "multiple fatalities," Ed Troyer, a spokesman for the local sheriff's office, told reporters at the scene. Budget approved by Parliament - PD MPs vote for some ministry allocations

The Budget for 2018 was approved by the House of Representatives this evening. After three hours of voting on the various Estimates, totalling €3.58 billion, the Budget was approved with 36 votes in favour and 30 against. Officials unconcerned about students’ low ranking in Maltese reading proficiency

Education officials have dismissed the low score in Maltese reading achieved by 10-year-olds in a major international study as not being representative of the real situation in Malta. Recent results from the 2016 Progress in International Reading Study (PIRLS) ranked Malta in 40th place out of the 50 countries which participated. Shots fired at US military base in England

US military personnel fired shots as they stopped a man who tried to force his way into a military base in central England used by the US air force on Monday, police said. The Mildenhall Royal Air Force base said security staff locked down the base, used by the United States to refuel US and NATO aircraft in Europe, at about 2pm following reports of a disturbance. Kappara project: Final tarmac laying on Tuesday

Workers will lay the final layer of asphalt of the Kappara project on Tuesday - all the way from the skate park till the flyover, on the San Ġwann side of the project. MSE Equity Price Index at 3-week high

The MSE Equity Price Index moved 0.35% higher today to reach a fresh 3-week high of 4,472.514 points on the back of the rebounds registered in FIMBank and PG as well as marginal increases in the share prices of Malta Properties and Medserv. Six properties to be restored

Mriehel Bypass bridge use hampered since lifts still missing

The lack of lifts makes the Mrieħel footbridge a barrier for those with mobility issues and cyclists, who are calling for the installation of ramps instead. Without lifts, which replaced the ramps in the original design, people with mobility issues, the elderly, those with pushchairs and cyclists are unable to access the bridge, and this make them risk crossing the road, possibly leading to another tragedy, the Bicycling Advocacy Group warns. Residents chase man who damaged cars - court jails him 10 months

A man who was recently released from jail, is back behind bars after damaging several parked cars during a drunken spree in Pieta'. Mustafa Mohamud Mohamed, a 29-year-old Somali national, was jailed for 10 months after admitting to having damaged the cars on Sunday night. A man was held in remand today after the latest episode of a long-running family feud which had children at its centre. The man was arrested on Sunday evening at around 6.30pm after turning up at Żebbuġ police station following an argument with his ex-wife and her father in Siġġiewi. Lampuki season extended by a month

Man arrested after €10,000 withdrawn with cloned cards

Substantial withdrawals from an ATM at a bank’s Msida branch raised the authorities' suspicions, leading to the arrest of a Romanian national. At least €10,000 are believed to have been withdrawn by means of a number of bank cards which appear to have been cloned. It is understood that the police have CCTV footage which show the suspect effecting the withdrawals. Journalist smashes computer to protect her sources

Finnish police searched a reporter's home and seized her computer after she tried to destroy the hard drive to protect sources linked to a security story, her newspaper reported. The journalist, Laura Halminen, said she tried to smash up her computer with a hammer in her home, but the laptop then started smoking and she called the fire brigade, according to an interview published by her employer Helsingin Sanomat. Next three years looking good for economy
