Emission impossible? Malta pays for Bulgarian energy

Times of Malta

Somewhere in Bulgaria a solar farm or some other ‘mystery’ green project is being funded by Maltese taxpayers because the island is missing its emissions targets, The Sunday Times of Malta has learnt.   The issue dates back to 2007, when the EU first launched its 2020 targets, which entail Member States substantially reducing their greenhouse gases. It turns out that Malta has been lagging so far behind its greenhouse gas reduction targets that it has been forced to restort to a ‘flexibility measure’. Читать дальше...

What if the elderly could swap home equity for long-term care?

Times of Malta

Home equity release could be one way of helping to guarantee better living standards for the elderly, according to Mario Vella, the Governor of the Central Bank of Malta. Addressing the annual dinner of the Institute of Financial Services (IFS) Malta on Friday evening, Dr Vella said: “We have a situation where many elderly persons are asset rich but cash poor.  They live on relatively modest pensions while residing in large and relatively expensive homes. “This creates issues for financing long-term care... Very Erie colour for beer

Times of Malta

A brewery in Ohio in the US is making a batch of green beer called Algae Blooms to draw attention to the toxic algae fouling Lake Erie. Maumee Bay Brewing Company said water was the main ingredient in its beers and access to clean water was essential. The Toledo firm uses the city's tap water sourced from Lake Erie, but algae outbreaks over recent summers have become a threat to drinking water. Manager Craig Kerr said the new beer looked like algae-contaminated water but did not taste like it. He... Читать дальше...

Watch: Highlights of Saturday's NBA games

Times of Malta

Celtics 116, Suns 111 Kyrie Irving scored five of his 19 points in the final 1:53 to help stop a Phoenix comeback and allow the Boston Celtics to escape with a 116-111 victory over the Suns on Saturday. Phoenix had cut a late eight-point deficit down to two before Irving calmly drained a three-pointer with 1:53 left to start a crazy finish that saw the home team hold on for the win, despite 38 points from Devin Booker. Booker, who scored 70 the last time he played at TD Garden, 51 in the second half... Читать дальше...

Carrie Fisher's final performance 'extraordinary' - Star Wars cast

Times of Malta

The Star Wars cast have praised the "irreplaceable" Carrie Fisher's last performance as Princess Leia as "extraordinary" ahead of the film's release. Fisher completed her scenes as the iconic character in Star Wars: The Last Jedi ahead of her death last December aged 60, leaving a galactic void that must be filled in the final film of the trilogy. Co-stars Mark Hamill, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega and Andy Serkis were among those to praise Fisher as they promoted the eight instalment of the franchise in Los Angeles on Saturday... Benevento's record-breaking run of losses looked set to continue when Giacomo Bonaventura put the visitors in front in the 38th minute... Читать дальше...

Times of Malta

German authorities investigating the delivery of a package containing powerful firecrackers, wires and nails to a pharmacy near a Christmas market in the city of Potsdam said on Sunday it was criminal activity rather than "terrorism." Destruction of Villa St Ignatius shows anarchy looming - PD

Times of Malta

The Planning Authority and the planning and construction industry in Malta had reached a historic low, where there was enough boldness to destroy a priceless gem without permission, in full view of the public, Partit Demokratiku said on Sunday, referring to the video showing workmen dismantling part of Villa St Ignatius in Balluta on Saturday. "The time has come to enforce the law and existing policies, without recourse to loopholes. Without proper enforcement, anarchy will reign and the situation shall continue to degenerate," it said... No points lost for illegal parking

Times of Malta

The offence for which wardens and police issue most fines – illegal parking – has been excluded from the newly introduced penalty point system, many drivers will be relieved to learn. The law had already become more lenient towards illegal parking in March when the government introduced a one-time warning system, turning a blind eye to illegal parking which does not cause obstruction. This is in spite of – or perhaps because of – the fact that illegal parking is, by far, the offence for which wardens and police issued most fines in 2015... Читать дальше...

Man vs woman

Times of Malta

In the wake of the sexual revolution and the rise of the women’s movement, the 1973 tennis match between women’s world champion Billie Jean King (Emma Stone) and former men’s champion Bobby Riggs (Steve Carell) was billed as the ‘battle of the sexes’. It became one of the most watched televised sports events of all time, reaching 90 million viewers around the world. It was a time when all kinds of walls –of race, gender, religion and sexual orientation – were just starting to tumble. Yet, for women... Читать дальше...

The work cycle

Times of Malta

Among all the types of physical activity I have encouraged others to take up over the years, there is one in particular I was always a little uncomfortable advocating, until now. It’s been about three months since I decided to take the plunge, and I couldn’t be happier with the outcome. I have no aspirations of hitting the race circuit any time soon, but simply getting to work and back each day on time and in the right head-space has proven a more enticing trophy than any. If you have ever wondered... Читать дальше...

Times of Malta

Updated 5.30pm The assasination of Daphne Caruana Galizia was not a crime like any other, Italian politician Antonio di Pietro said on Sunday evening, saying that it was not enough to find out who had killed her but rather who ordered it. "There is only one way to get this...by making your voices heard. Daphne Caruana Galizia was killed, because she was isolated. That is why you must unite," he told the crowd. The anti-corruption campaigner warned that corruption whittles away the system, and that... Читать дальше...

Scicluna off ballot list for Eurogroup head

Times of Malta

Malta’s Finance Minister, Edward Scicluna, appears to have become a casualty of the backlash in the EU as Malta comes under increasing scrutiny over its tax regime and connection to the Panama Papers. As the 19 eurozone finance ministers meet in Brussels on Monday to choose who among them will head the powerful Eurogroup, Prof. Scicluna has not put his name on the ballot sheet. This despite the fact that earlier this month, the minister – considered one of the most upright members in the Muscat cabinet ... Читать дальше...

It takes more than two to Tango in Argentina

Times of Malta

Argentines took part in the annual Great National Milonga on Saturday (December 02), a mass street tango performance, to celebrate the famous dance. Buenos Aires' Avenida de Mayo became an outdoor street tango dance salon -- known as a "milonga" - for the annual event, which marks National Tango Day. The tango originated in the early 19th century in the working-class port areas of Buenos Aires. Now a ballroom dance popular around the world, couples still can be seen passionately dancing the tango... Читать дальше...

New menu at Taro Restaurant

Times of Malta

Finding a restaurant that serves an eclectic, contemporary menu in a soothing ambience is a rarity in itself. And finding one that somehow combines this with near-perfect service and with pre- and post-dinner cocktails to kill for, making for one hell of a package, is pretty much the Holy Grail for foodies. I recently found the Holy Grail at Taro, the flagship fine-dining restaurant of Le Méridien St Julian’s Hotel & Spa. Situated on the same floor as the lobby of the hotel, but tucked away discreetly... Читать дальше...
