European politics after Merkel

Times of Malta

Germany is about to elect a new chancellor. Angela Merkel has been in power for nearly 16 years, having won four consecutive elections. Many argue that were it not for Merkel, the European Union would today be much weaker than it is. Others insist the outgoing German chancellor failed to effectively address severe structural weaknesses in the EU and her own country. Most political analysts agree that Merkel is a committed believer in the value of the EU. Her negotiating skills were evident when... Читать дальше...

'This is why I did it': architect on his ambitious plan to plant 40,000 trees

Times of Malta

Architect Nicholas Mallia was facing a choice. Either emigrate over his frustration at the lack of attention being given to the environment, as some of his friends have done. Or use his skills to do something about it. He chose the second. With the help of friends and colleagues, he has come up with an ambitious proposal to plant 40,000 trees at the Inwadar national park in Marsascala. “We spend a lot of time complaining about the current situation,” Mallia told Times of Malta. “The options are... Abuse was flagged for years before massive fire at Marsa scrapyard

Times of Malta

A Marsa scrapyard where “the largest industrial fire in years” broke out earlier this month had received warnings about a long list of environmental infringements believed to be the likely cause of the blaze. A series of ‘stop and compliance’ orders were issued against the JAC Steel scrapyard by the environmental watchdog over the past five years. They include late cleaning of oil spills and incorrect storage of heaps of flammable materials that at times even stretched beyond the confines of the site. Читать дальше...

Why music gave me a lifeline in prison

Times of Malta

When Steven Gatkuoth attempted to flee Libya for the seventh time in two years, he was returned to north African soil nursing two bullet wounds that left him limping for a year. “They were aiming to kill. I was lucky as they only got me right in my upper thigh,” the 23-year-old told Times of Malta “Following that pushback, I spent a year in prison, where I was beaten up and had no good food or water. I saw people around me despair. Not knowing when I’d be let out, I spent my time writing 36 songs... Читать дальше...

Ġulja Holland, a shaking voice that relates sad truths

Times of Malta

Exploitation has always been the name of the game since the dawn of early civilisation. Human beings have sourced all that nature offers them, at first through a balance that owed much to their basic instinct honed by millions of years of evolution from micro-organisms to enterprising bipedal animals and then through their capacity as sentient creatures that could rationalise, dream, calculate and eventually abuse of what they erroneously thought was intrinsically theirs. Planet Earth has supported a number of biomes... Читать дальше...

Get on track to combat pandemic’s mental and physical ill-effects

Times of Malta

Feeling locked down? Unlock your potential by taking up a sport, advises obstacle course racing (OCR) and trail athlete DUNCAN BARRY  The COVID-19 pandemic has brought about both mental and physical health-related issues – and although Malta fared comparatively well and didn’t procrastinate with too many lockdowns, many people chose to stay at home in a bid to reduce the chances of contracting the virus or out of fear of spreading the virus. And rightly so, many employees worked from home while... Читать дальше...

Myth Debunked: The planets’ appearance through a telescope

Times of Malta

Observing the planets through a telescope might seem like a repetitive task to undertake. After all, the solar system has been around for 4.6 billion years, and so have the planets in our solar system, so it might appear reasonable to assume that observing the planets through a telescope would always yield the same view. However, observing planets on different nights throughout the year reveals a changing view of our planetary neighbours. Venus, as well as the elusive Mercury, appear to change... Читать дальше...

Saturn: the ringed gas giant in our cosmic backyard

Times of Malta

Our solar system contains a wide variety of planetary bodies, from the inner, small rocky planets to the outer solar system’s massive gas giants. While the most massive of the gas giants, Jupiter, is indeed a sight to behold in its own right, Saturn is undisputedly the more well-known planet, due to its pronounced ring system. Indeed, all gas giants in our solar system have a ring system associated with them. However, for Jupiter, Uranus and Neptune, this ring system is extremely faint, almost unobservable from Earth.
