Cristiano Ronaldo will wear Manchester United’s iconic number seven again after Edinson Cavani agreed to surrender the shirt. Ronaldo followed in a long list of United legends to have worn number seven during his first spell with United from 2003 to 2009. ABBA announces new album after nearly four decades

Swedish pop icons Abba on Thursday announced that they are releasing a new album as well as putting on a show featuring digital avatars. The group's Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson said via a video presentation in London that "We have made a new album with ABBA".  At the top of London's ArcelorMittal Orbit tower, Universal Music Group held a presentation of a new song called "I Still Have Faith in You". Man denied bail after Msida brawl

A man, allegedly found in possession of drugs after police intervened to break up a brawl outside an Msida store on Sunday morning, was denied bail on Thursday. Yemane Teklom Zerislase, a 30-year old Eritrean national living at Gzira, was arraigned today over his alleged involvement in the violent incident when police were alerted to the heated argument at around 8.20am. Ponte Ferries ‘has no final approved permit to operate’ to Sicily’s Augusta

Ponte Ferries is still in discussions with the competent authorities in Augusta over a ferry service to the Sicilian port and no final approved permit to operate has been issued, the company said yesterday. However, documents seen by Times of Malta have shown that a temporary permit was issued by the Augusta port authorities on August 11, which allowed Ponte Ferries to operate. A shark was spotted off Dwejra in Gozo on Thursday morning, sparking panic among a group of swimmers in the vicinity.  The estimated two-metre long fish was seen near the area known as Crocodile Rock. Witnesses said the shark kept circling them, and since the rock is completely detached from the mainland, the swimmers climbed to small rock, until captain Adrian Borg spotted them as he was navigating his boat. Record-breaking amounts of recyclables processed

A suspect drug trafficker, arrested on Tuesday after reacting aggressively to police orders, was denied bail upon his arraignment on Thursday. COVID boosters for elderly in homes brought forward as clusters are detected

Two men injured in Gudja crash

Two men were injured in a crash between a car and a motorbike on Triq Dawret il-Gudja. The police said the accident took place at 8 am, and both men were rushed to hospital.  The motorbike driver, a 59-year-old from Żabbar, suffered grievous injuries, while the other man, a 26-year-old from Għaxaq who was driving a Nissan, suffered slight injuries.  Police investigations are ongoing. 

Malta facing 'phenomenal' shortage in accountants, campaign launched

A severe shortage of accountants has prompted the Malta Institute of Accountants (MIA) to launch a campaign to attract more students to the profession. Addressing a press conference on Thursday, MIA president Fabio Axisa said the shortage had been felt “phemonenally” for the last five years, as demand outweighed supply. "An average of 150-200 accountants are being registered each year, and this is currently 50% of what we need,” Axisa said.
