National Book Council gets a new chairperson

A crime fiction novelist who works as a deputy school principal has been appointed the new chairperson of the National Book Council.  Mark Camilleri was appointed to the role by the Education Ministry on Wednesday. El Salvador adopts Bitcoin as legal tender, in world first

El Salvador on Tuesday became the first country to introduce bitcoin as legal tender, with high demand forcing a freeze of its online cyber "wallet" system on Day 1. Under the initiative of President Nayib Bukele, Salvadoran consumers can now legally use bitcoin -- along with the US dollar which has been the official currency for two decades -- to pay for any good or service. Thieves steal €10m in jewellery from Bulgari store in Paris

A group of thieves struck the Bulgari store in Paris's Place Vendome on Tuesday, making off with around €10 million in jewellery after leading police on a high-speed chase that saw two of the suspects captured, sources told AFP. The attack on the luxury store in the heart of the French capital occurred around noon, and officers arrived at the scene shortly after, a police source said. Belgium and the Netherlands are now Europe's major cocaine hubs: Europol

Belgium and the Netherlands have become major hubs for cocaine trafficking into Europe, overtaking Spain as the primary smuggling route, the EU's policing agency said Tuesday.  Cashing in on increased cocaine supplies, notably from Colombia, criminal gangs are using the port cities of Rotterdam, Hamburg and especially Antwerp to ship in the drug to the Netherlands, from where it is distributed across Europe, Europol said. Four men granted bail in 136kg, €2.5m cannabis case

Four suspected drug traffickers arrested last month in the biggest drug haul in Malta this year were granted bail on Tuesday. Ramla Bay Resort redevelopment will impact surrounding views

Potential negative impacts of the proposed Ramla Bay Resort development include changes to the views from the surroundings, according to an Environmental Impact Assessment report. The new 400-room hotel in Marfa is slated to replace the older property with three large blocks. Some 1.2 kilometres of roads will service the Luqa industrial estate, Economy Minister Silvio Schembri said on Tuesday, with works in similar zones earmarked for the near future.    In a statement, Schembri said the €5.5 million investment will see road upgrades and new routes that were long overdue in the Luqa industrial estate.  Schembri said more road network upgrades will be carried out around industrial areas with an investment of €30 million in the industrial areas of Ħal Far, Bulebel, Marsa, Corradino, and San Ġwann. Man injured after falling from shipping container

An employee was seriously injured when he fell from the top of a shipping container while working in an industrial estate on Tuesday.  In a statement, the police on Tuesday said the incident had taken place at around 9am in the morning.  The 24-year-old Somali national fell during works the Ħal Far industrial estate.   He was taken to Mater Dei Hospital by ambulance where he was certified as having suffered serious injuries.   Duty magistrate Rachel Montebello has been assigned to conduct a magisterial inquiry. COVID-19: 29 in hospital, 41 new cases registered

A total of 29 COVID-19 patients are currently being treated in hospital, with 41 new cases registered overnight.  A further 29 recovered bringing the overall number of active cases to 722, according to daily data published by health authorities on Tuesday.    There were no deaths linked to the virus over the past 24 hours. Health authorities have stopped providing a daily number of swab tests as well as the total number of swab tests, total number of cases, and total recoveries.  Of those in hospital, two are receiving intensive treatment.
