Floriana claim derby spoils against Valletta

Floriana secured their first victory of the season in spectacular fashion after beating rivals Valletta 3-0. The Greens were rewarded for their impressive performance, dominating their opponents for the majority of the game with a goal in each half to top their display. Restaurants go dark as power cut hits Marsalforn promenade

Restaurants along the Marsalforn promenade, packed with diners on Saturday night, were plunged into darkness when a power cut hit the area.  Power went out around 8.45pm and was only restored around half an hour later. While a couple of restaurants were able to switch to generators, diners at most were left in pitch darkness, with some restaurants advising clients they were not able to serve them.  The promenade along the Marsalforn seafront is one of the most popular touristic areas in Gozo and is lined with bars and restaurants. Two cyclists grievously injured in collision with car in Mġarr

A car collided with three cyclists in Mġarr on Saturday morning, seriously injuring two of them.  Police said the incident took place at around 8am in Telgħet tad-Dwejra.  The three cyclists, a 44-year old Maltese man and two Italian nationals, 33 and 40, were taken to Mater Dei Hospital, although one did not require further treatment.  Police investigations are ongoing.

She tells Mark Laurence Zammit about her fight against a deadly disease – and the discrimination it left behind. Martina Fenech lost her mother to cancer when she was 15. Two months after her mother’s death, she was diagnosed with cancer herself and survived. Four years later she lost her boyfriend to cancer. Max Verstappen will start the Formula One Italian Grand Prix at the front of the grid despite finishing second in Saturday’s qualifying sprint. Man arrested after three police officers injured in Żabbar

A 48-year old man has been arrested after an incident in Żabbar which left three police officers injured on Friday night.  Police said the officers were called to the scene in Misraħ is-Sliem around midnight on a report of two men fighting.  Police intervened to break up the fight, but one of the men, a 48-year old Marsascala resident, allegedly attacked the officers despite efforts to restrain him.  He was arrested and the officers received treatment at a health centre for light injuries. A law firm that gave legal advice to companies involved in the Vitals Global Healthcare hospitals scandal has been targeted by a police raid. DF Advocates said in a statement on Saturday that their involvement in the hospital concession was “solely and purely” that of legal advisors to the companies forming part of the VGH group. LGBTI+ Gozo opens service hub in Victoria

Wine and viticulture museum planned for Buskett

An old building in Buskett is to be turned into a wine and viticulture museum, Agriculture Minister Anton Refalo said on Saturday.  Work to develop the museum has been divided into different stages, with the first stage – a €100,000 restoration of the building – to be carried out this year. Diplomatic immunity is no carte blanche, court tells father in parental dispute

A family court has told a diplomat stationed in Malta that he cannot claim diplomatic immunity to defy a court order and prevent his divorced wife from seeing their sons. In a decision delivered on Friday, the court confirmed a warrant of prohibitory injunction that the mother had sought and effectively stopped the man, who works at Spain’s embassy, from travelling out of Malta with one of the couple’s minor sons. Man, 96, dies as COVID patients in hospital rise to 31

The number of COVID-19 patients in hospital rose to 31 on Saturday, health ministry data indicated, with three of those patients requiring intensive care. On Friday, there were 28 patients in hospital and two in Mater Dei Hospital’s ITU. A 96-year-old man who was COVID-19 positive died during the past 24 hours, becoming the 447th person to die while positive since the start of the pandemic. Woman killed in Gżira traffic incident has been identified: police

A woman killed in a traffic collision in Gżira has been identified, one day after police issued a public appeal for information.  The victim was a 68-year-old woman from Bulgaria, the police said in a statement on Saturday.  She died after she was hit by a motorcycle on Triq ix-Xatt in Gżira just after 2am early on Friday morning.
