Documenting Maltese streets, one townhouse at a time

Times of Malta

This is the third article in a three-part series. Read part one and part two.  The ħabbata (door knocker), grada (wrought iron gate), ħasira (cane curtain) and the antiporta (anteport) are some of the typical elements of traditional Maltese townhouses that photographer Jean-Paul Borg never tires to capture. Each of these elements has its own history and particular origin, which Borg loves to share alongside his photos on his Facebook page Kappa Vision. Most of the charming townhouses, found in the core of most towns and villages... Читать дальше...

Trapped on island habitats made smaller by rising seas, Indonesia's Komodo dragons were listed as "endangered" on Saturday, in an update of the wildlife Red List that also warned overfishing threatens nearly two-in-five sharks with extinction.  About 28 percent of the 138,000 species assessed by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) for its survival watchlist are now at risk of vanishing in the wild forever, as the destructive impact of human activity on the natural world deepens. Uphill battle: Spain’s wine growers adapt to climate change

Times of Malta

For over a century, Joaquin Gay de Montella Estany’s family produced wine in Spain’s Mediterranean region of Catalonia but the effects of climate change have pushed them to seek higher ground. Now their Torre del Veguer winery also has vineyards at the foot of the Pyrenees mountains – at an altitude of nearly 1,200 metres – where temperatures are cooler. It’s one of the ways in which Spain’s wine producers are trying to adapt, as a warmer climate advances the harvest season and makes the need for more heat-tolerant grape varieties greater.

Artificial Intelligence cannot get a patent for inventions, US judge rules

Times of Malta

District court judge Leonie Brinkema backed a decision by the US patent office to turn away applications made on behalf of a "creativity machine" named DABUS. Brinkema issued a ruling on Thursday saying that "the clear answer is 'no'" to the question of whether an AI machine qualifies as an inventor under patent law. "As technology evolves, there may come... Читать дальше...
