San Ġiljan yesterday were on a double mission – That of retaining the KO trophy, and to seek redemption after suffering a 10-6 defeat at the hands of Neptunes, which cost them the league title. Relying on their resilience, tactical discipline and newly-found spirit, they accomplished their double task by defeating their neighbours11-10. 75-year-old motorcyclist grievously injured in crash

A 75-year-old motorcyclist had to be rushed to Mater Dei on Wednesday afternoon after he was involved in a crash in St Julian's.  The man, from Naxxar, was involved in an accident with 57-year-old man who was driving a Honda Accord. The accident occurred at around 3.30pm on St Andrew Street. The motorcyclist was rushed to Mater Dei Hospital where his condition was found to be grievous.  Police investigations are ongoing. 



A third of global tree species are threatened with extinction

Around a third of all the world's tree species are threatened with extinction, according to a global index published Wednesday, warning that climate change could tip some forests into ecosystem collapse.      Land clearance for farming -- both crops and livestock -- and logging are by far the biggest threats to trees, the State of the World's Trees report said, adding that climate change was also "having a clearly measurable impact". Woman hurt in fall while cleaning

Times of Malta 

A 59-year-old woman was grievously injured after falling a height of around one storey while cleaning, the police said on Wednesday.  The woman, who is from Żebbuġ, fell while at a residence on Dun Karm Psaila street.  Police said they were informed of the incident at around 11.30am. She was taken to Mater Dei where she was found to be suffering grievous injuries.  Police investigations are still ongoing.

As eight-year-old Zac Bugeja stood up on the beach ladder just before jumping into the sea to start his first-ever swimming challenge, his stomach fluttered. Yet he knew there was no going back. “I was very happy and nervous,” Zac told Times of Malta. Shell plans 50,000 UK electric car charging points

Anglo-Dutch oil giant Royal Dutch Shell unveiled plans on Wednesday to install up to 50,000 electric car charging points in Britain in the coming years. Shell said in a statement that its Ubitricity subsidiary aims to reach the target by late 2025, under the company’s transition toward green energy.  Ubitricity, which was founded in Germany in 2008 and purchased by Shell earlier this year, provides on-street electric vehicle charging across Europe. Vittoriosa-based artist Clemens Hasengschwandtner dies

Clemens Hasengschwandtner, renowned for his colourful pop-inspired art and characteristic interpretation of Malta-linked themes, died on September 1.  Austrian by birth and born in 1972, he first visited Malta in 1997 and was captivated by its nuances and Mediterranean joie de vivre, which he translated onto his collage-like canvases.    He eventually opened a wine bar and art gallery in Vittoriosa which showcased his paintings. Man grievously injured in Naxxar accident

A 49-year-old man had to be rushed to Mater Dei Hospital on Wednesday morning to be treated for grievous injuries after he fell off a ladder at a house in Naxxar.  In a statement, the police said it was called to St Paul Street in Naxxar at around 9am.  The 49-year-old, who is from Rabat, fell off the ladder while carrying out works at the Naxxar residence.  The man was given first aid on site before being transferred to Mater Dei where doctors confirmed he had grievous injuries.  Investigations by the police are ongoing. The health authorities warned on Wednesday that Isola Bio creams must not be consumed because of potential contamination with Ethylene oxide. Ethylene oxide is a pesticide that is not permitted for use in foods sold in the EU but is approved by other countries outside the EU. Google extends remote work option due to pandemic
