Central Bank staff concerned about ‘partisan' influence

A number of employees at the Central Bank of Malta have raised concerns with this newspaper over the growing potential for “partisan” influence to be exerted at the independent institution. The CBM is governed by former Labour Party president Mario Vella. A recent move has irked several employees, who spoke to The Sunday Times of Malta on condition of anonymity. 20,000 flee massive fire at music festival in Barcelona

About 20,000 people had to be evacuated amid a massive fire at a music festival in Spain. Images from the scene show towering flames consuming a large outdoor stage at the Tomorrowland electronic music festival at Barcelona's Parc de Can Zam on Saturday night. Firefighters said there were no serious injuries during the concert evacuation but the event's private security treated 20 people for minor injuries or anxiety. Reverse vindictive transfers, Busuttil tells Muscat

Simon Busuttil this morning called on Prime Minister Joseph Muscat to reverse several “vindictive transfers”, including that of Marsascala councillor and PN electoral candidate Charlot Cassar. The environment campaigner has already resorted to legal avenues after receiving two transfers in the space of a few days. After two truckloads of deck chairs and umbrellas were confiscated from Qawra Point in an enforcement action yesterday, the situation was back to square one this morning with more beach furniture adorning the beach. A reader submitted the photo above showing the scene at 8am this morning. She pointed out that locals had to place their belongings on a wet cement slab and the rest of the space was taken by the deck chairs. Dog gets help for two girls struck by lightning

Two girls are recovering from a lightning strike after their dog brought help to the site where they injured on a Utah mountain. Authorities said the girls, aged eight and 16, were crossing a meadow to explore during a family camping trip when the lightning hit on Friday morning.
