US is 'done talking' about North Korea, says UN envoy

Times of Malta

The United States is "done talking about North Korea" and China is aware they must act, US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said today after North Korea fired its second long-range missile this month and amid a push by Washington to impose stronger UN sanctions on Pyongyang. "Done talking about North Korea. China is aware they must act. Japan and South Korea must increase pressure. Not only a U.S. problem. It will require an international solution," Haley posted on Twitter. She then posted a link to photos of the United States... Читать дальше...

Customs cracks down on contraband cigarettes

Times of Malta

Contraband cigarette smugglers, sellers and smokers, you have been warned.  Customs has announced an extensive crackdown on the black market for contraband cigarettes, with anything from shops to band clubs and even private residences in officials' sights.   In a statement announcing the anti-contraband operation, Customs singled out four brands of cigarettes smuggled into Malta - Business Royals, American Legend, Manchester and Tradition - and noted that a court had recently sent a smuggler to jail for six months and fined them €13,082. Bold, clear, slick storytelling

Times of Malta

Ovid’s epic poem Metamorphoses, consisting of over 250 episodes chronicling the multiple facets of erotic love, has been influencing playwrights for centuries since it was published in AD 8. It has, however, rarely (if ever) been adapted for the local theatre. It was therefore a bold and wise move for Adrian Buckle, founder of Unifaun Theatre, to adapt a selection of the stories from such a timeless classic into Maltese as part of this year’s Malta Arts Festival. The text of the adaptation, masterfully translated into Maltese by Trevor Zahra... Читать дальше...

Watch: Paradise Bay cleared of 1 tonne of rubbish

Times of Malta

Updated 8.35pm - Added video Wedged in between rocks at Paradise Bay, the red plastic jerrycan stuck out like a sore thumb. So too did the rusted water heater lying atop a pile of driftwood. Decaying plastic bottles dotted the jagged landscape like cactuses in a desert.  By the time the sun set on the Natura 2000 site, all were gone, carried away by around 60 volunteers who took part in a four-hour Paradise Bay cleanup last Friday.  READ: Volunteers gather an eye-popping 11 tonnes of waste from Mellieħa In all... Did you know it was illegal to 'run violently' in the street?

Times of Malta

You probably know that topless bathing is illegal, but how about leaving a ladder outside? From pigeons to grass cutting, as he trawled through the Criminal Code, Kurt Sansone discovered some interesting things you may not have known you couldn’t do. Never mind that it sounds like a stupid idea, but leaving a ladder out on the street is illegal, according to the law. Well, to be exact, it is not just leaving a ladder on the sidewalk that could land you in trouble but any “iron bar, weapon or other... Читать дальше...

Engaging, bright and enthusiastic

Times of Malta

When the fireworks get noisy, the insects get nippy, and the whole neighbourhood drags their favourite stools out onto the parapet for a gossip, summer has truly set in. And with that hot, sticky season, a theatrical tradition: the summer Shakespeare by MADC. Though the annual production had a few wobbly years as a wandering troupe, its home in the beautiful San Anton Gardens truly is part of the  experience, and this year was no different. But the question arises: how do you keep the tradition... Читать дальше...

Activists arrested as Vietnam cracks down on dissenters

Times of Malta

Vietnamese police arrested four activists for anti-state activities today, the police ministry said, in a widening crackdown on critics of the Communist Party that human rights groups have described as alarming. Despite sweeping reforms to Vietnam's economy and growing openness to social change, the ruling party does not tolerate criticism. The activists arrested were linked to Nguyen Van Dai, a lawyer who was arrested in 2015 for anti-state propaganda, the police website said. They were being investigated... Читать дальше...

Fatal nightclub shooting was not terrorism-related, say German police

Times of Malta

An Iraqi gunman died in a shootout with German police early today after killing one person in a nightclub in the southern city of Konstanz, police said, ruling out terrorism as a motive. "The motives of the man who acted alone are unclear," Konstanz police spokesman Fritz Bezikofer told broadcaster n-tv. "We are still investigating but the circumstances surrounding the events at the disco in the evening before the shooting are a bit clearer and this led us to rule out a terrorism background." The... US doctors worry electronic health records are distracting them from their patients

Times of Malta

Rebekah Gardner has to make a choice each time she sees a patient in her Rhode Island office: she can scroll computer screens and click boxes, or she can focus on the patient and take home the computer work. “We’re either left fumbling through data entry with our patient in the exam room, missing out on an opportunity to truly connect, or we’re left with hours of documentation and computer work after a long day of seeing patients,” she said in a phone interview. Dr Gardner, a professor at Brown University’s Alpert Medical School in Providence... Читать дальше...

'Very little shocks people nowadays': Zucchero wants a little more compassion

Times of Malta

When Zucchero Sugar Fornaciari takes to the stage in Malta, his message of love will also feature a poignant reminder of the sea of death that surrounds us. Kurt Sansone dropped the Italian singer and songwriter some questions ahead of the Malta leg of his Black Cat world tour. Migration is back in the news in Italy as the country struggles to cope with an influx of mainly Africans escaping Libya. It is a phenomenon that has over the past four years largely bypassed Malta, and the absence of boat people may have made us numb. Читать дальше...

Vettel wins in Hungary to stretch F1 lead

Times of Malta

Sebastian Vettel won a tense Hungarian Grand Prix this afternoon in a Ferrari one-two that stretched his Formula One championship lead over Mercedes rival Lewis Hamilton to 14 points. The German, taking his fourth win of the season, took the chequered flag 0.9 seconds ahead of Kimi Raikkonen with Hamilton finishing fourth after sportingly surrendering third place to team mate Valtteri Bottas on the last lap. Bottas had let Hamilton past to attack the Ferraris, on the assurance that his team mate... Читать дальше...

Yes to Qatar talks, but with conditions - Arab rivals

Times of Malta

The four Arab countries which have cut ties with Qatar said today they were ready for talks to tackle the dispute if Doha showed willingness to deal with their demands. The foreign ministers of Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) met in the Bahraini capital Manama to discuss the crisis that has raised tensions across the region. 'Archaic' exam systems are putting student futures at risk - AD

Times of Malta

Students living with ADHD, autism or dyslexia should not be made victims of "overly bureaucratic and archaic" assessment systems, Alternattiva Demokratika has said.  "The exam and assessment process should encourage learning and not be a barrier," said AD spokesperson Anna Azzopardi, who welcomed a report which found that MATSEC arrangements for students with the aforementioned conditions were not sufficient to ensure they faced exams "on a truly level ground with other candidates." Half the success... Читать дальше...

Admiralty Floating Dock No. 8 – From Kiel to Corradino

Times of Malta

From time immemorial, marine craft requiring painting, repair, careening and demolition have been pulled ashore on sandy beaches. As ships got larger, they were keeled over to port and starboard by shifting ballast to one side. Later, the Chinese invented the first graving dock (grave: from old French greve, shore, the process of cleaning a ship’s bottom by burning off accretions and then tarring). The term ‘graving dock’ continues to be used, albeit superseded by the modern ‘dry dock’. In the construction... Читать дальше...

A land of authenticity and stark diversity

Times of Malta

Attributed to different origins, the name Tunis is generally linked to the Berber root which means ‘to lay down or encamp’, and with the northern reaches of the Sahara desert and the eastern end of the Atlas Mountains contained within its borders, it is little wonder that this North African country has been the desired dwelling place of many. With a climate much like Malta’s and a friendly people to match, Tunisia was a much loved destination by the Maltese and it is this beautiful connection between... Читать дальше...
