EU sounds alarm, urges US to coordinate on Russia sanctions

Times of Malta

The European Union has sounded an alarm about moves in the US Congress to step up US sanctions on Russia, urging Washington to keep coordinating with its G7 partners and warning of unintended consequences. In a statement by a spokeswoman after Republicans and Democrats in the US Congress reached a deal that could see new legislation pass, the European Commission warned of possibly "wide and indiscriminate" "unintended consequences", notably on the EU's efforts to diversify energy sources away from Russia. The €1.46 million project, which will cater for up to 370 families, is based at the Fiddien water reservoir in the limits of Rabat, which has a footprint of two football pitches. The area is to be covered by an estimated 4,000 panels, which will contribute to a reduction of about 600 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year. Smokers who have heart attacks unlikely to turn to drugs to help them quit, research finds

Times of Malta

People may be inspired to quit smoking cigarettes soon after a heart attack, but new research suggests many don't take advantage of drugs that could help them. Only 7% of smokers picked up a prescription for a smoking cessation drug during the 90 days following their heart attacks, researchers found. "These medications are being underused," said lead author Dr Neha Pagidipati, of Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. "Now we need to understand why." Pagidipati and colleagues noted in JAMA Cardiology... Читать дальше...

Trump talks pardons amid probes of Russia role in US election

Times of Malta

U.S. President Donald Trump took to Twitter on Saturday declaring that he has "complete power to pardon," as his administration continued to be bogged down by ongoing investigations of possible ties between his 2016 campaign and Russia. Trump did not specify who, if anyone, he might consider pardoning. But his tweets appeared to be in response to Washington Post reports this week that Trump and his legal team have examined presidential powers to pardon Trump aides, family members and possibly even himself. The environment, history and geography

Times of Malta

As one does these days, I was having a conversation with several friends on social media about excessive construction in Malta. The starting point was whether the outrage one reads in Maltese media about over-development is actually happening in a bubble of like-minded individuals or whether it is more widespread. These discussions go all over the place, but I was pleased to engage with my friend James Debono, who at some point made a comment which I want to quote in its entirety because I believe it chimes with my feeling over the matter. New £30million goalkeeper... Читать дальше...

No to legalising prostitution, says woman's council

Times of Malta

The Council of Women is concerned over the proposed debate on the regularisation and decriminalisation of prostitution. In a statement, it reiterated its position that such a law would be “a confirmation that women are considered a commodity and that women’s sexual favours are there for the taking as long as one pays”. This “worst form of degradation” of women is “totally unacceptable” to the National Council of Women. The NCW believes respecting women's dignity and human rights should translate into practice through a holistic... Читать дальше...

An Australian expat says she has chosen to leave Malta and return to her country in frustration over the overwhelming number of unchecked illegalities on the island.  "I've had enough of this country.
