Higher temperatures and water scarcity are starting to present a challenge to agriculture even in countries far to the north. Farmers must resort to technology to cope with more arid conditions. In the face of encroaching climate change, visiting experts from Spain and the UK have been showing farmers how to better manage their fields. Читать дальше...

From donating a €3 bar of soap to a €1,300 water storage tank, anyone can restore some dignity to the people who cross paths with the Jesus in Thy Neighbour missionary movement. Founded by Fr George Grima 30 years ago, the main aim of the movement is to help out vulnerable children living on the streets of Brazil, Ethiopia and Kenya. However, the movement also supports families, including lepers, who are treated as outcasts and are forced out of their villages and into cemeteries. Houses for people with leprosy... Gaulitana’s last three concerts

Times of Malta

The last three concerts in this year’s Gaulitana Festival in Gozo had a link between them. It began with the violin and piano recital at the Gozo Ministry hall by the Gran Duo Italiano, consisting of Mauro Tortorelli (violin) and Angela Meluso (piano). They launched into this memorable concert with Franck’s Violin Sonata in A, for which I have a deep predilection. It was simply superb, exquisitely performed and, of course, it provides parity of prominence to both performers. It needs two master musicians and a special rapport between the two. Andy Serkis has single-handedly brought the art of performance capture to the fore; an art he continues in the rebooted Planet of the Apes saga as Caesar, the leader of the species of highly intelligent apes spawned from a scientific experiment gone awry. The experiment led to the almost complete wipe-out of the human race, and Caesar attempted to keep the peace with the few survivors - but it was a peace that was always tenuous. The actor says that taking this journey with Caesar, now for the third time in War for the Planet of the Apes... Читать дальше...

Cars far worse than bars for second-hand smoke

Times of Malta

A single cigarette smoked in a stationary car with its windows closed can produce a very high level of second-hand smoke. Dr Charmaine Gauci explains. Smokers often think that keeping the window open in a car while they are smoking will not affect the other passengers in the car. Yet experimental models show that in a moving car with windows open, the level of second-hand smoke produced by a single cigarette can be as high as seven times the average level of a smoky bar.
