Man hurt after one-storey fall off ladder

A 63-year-old man from Gżira was injured after he fell off a ladder while working on the ceiling of a house in Armier at 4.10pm today. The man only fell the height of one storey, the police said, but was nevertheless seriously hurt.

At least 23 Egyptian soldiers killed in deadliest Sinai attack in years

At least 23 Egyptian soldiers were killed when two suicide car bombs tore through military checkpoints in North Sinai province today, security sources said, in one of the bloodiest coordinated assaults on security forces in years. Putin and Trump agree Syria ceasefire - Lavrov

Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart Donald Trump agreed on a ceasefire in southwestern Syria during talks at the G20 summit, Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said today. The truce, agreed during talks held in a "constructive atmosphere", would start on July 9, Lavrov told reporters. 600 repeat truants get one-on-one action plan

The government has drawn up individual programmes for 604 students who are persistently absent from school, according to Education Minister Evarist Bartolo. The programmes are being monitored and assessed by social workers every month and are tweaked where necessary. Villa Castro in Naxxar, a project by Architecture Project in collaboration with Jens Bruenslow, has been shortlisted in this year’s World Architecture Festival Awards, New & Old - Completed Buildings category. Party organiser conditionally discharged for sexting a minor

A party organiser accused of raping an underage girl received a conditional discharge today after a court found that while he had encouraged the minor to have sex over Facebook, charges related to rape had not been proven beyond reasonable doubt. Marvin Buttigieg, 33, from Victoria, was accused of having raped the 16-year old, defiling her and holding her against her will. Betsson complains about ‘flagrant breach’ by the Netherlands

Gaming operator Betsson has written to the European Commission complaining about what it described as “the continued and flagrant breach by the Dutch authorities of EU law”. French police took thousands of migrants living in tents on the pavements of northern Paris to temporary lodgings in and around the city on Frida today. MSE Share Index retreats from over 3-month high

The MSE Share Index trended lower for the first time in the last three trading sessions as it slipped by 0.13% to 4,723.692 points from its highest level in over three months of 4,729.757 points. The declines in the share prices of IHI (-1.6%), BOV (-0.4%) and Farsons (-0.4%) outweighed the gains in HSBC (+0.05%), RS2 (+1.1%) and Malta Properties (+2.7%). Comino has received an ecological face-lift with bulky waste removed, sand dunes cordoned off and alien plants which threatened indigenous species removed. A young Bulgarian pickpocket was conditionally discharged and ordered out of the country following her arraignment this morning on charges of attempted theft. Two men who engaged unwary passers-by in an illegal game of chance were each fined €500 today and ordered to leave Malta this very evening. Formula One title contender Lewis Hamilton will have a five-place grid penalty for Sunday's Austrian Grand Prix after his car required an unscheduled gearbox change, Mercedes said on Friday. France to sell €10 billion worth of state assets - source

France will sell €10 billion worth of state assets to finance projects geared towards innovation, a finance ministry source said today. "It will be done as soon as market conditions will allow," the source said, adding that these would mostly concern minority stakes. While campaigning for the presidency, Emmanuel Macron had said he would set up a €10 billion fund to promote industrial and research projects, but official comments over the past days had raised questions over whether this would all be financed by the sale of state stakes or not. Rubbish set on fire in Ħandaq

Youths in Kirkop went back to the 80s and 90s last month during a street festival that raised €1,300 for the Inspire Foundation.  The festival was organised by the youth section of Kirkop's Għaqda Mużikali San Leonardu and featured DJs Alex Grech, Ryan Spiteri and Renato Vella among others.  "These young people have so generously offered their time and commitment to organise an event in aid of a good cause. Messi prison sentence lifted in exchange for fine

A Spanish court said on Friday it has exchanged a 21-month prison sentence handed to Soccer player Lionel Messi for tax fraud last July for a quarter-of-a-million-euro fine. A man who early yesterday morning allegedly took the police on a wild, movie-like car chase, was today denied bail after pleading not guilty to a string of charges. Police in court explained how George Azzopardi, 38, from Naxxar, was flagged to a halt by the police but rather than obeying the order he allegedly rammed a police car.
