Two people arrested after cannabis find

Two Britons, aged 55 and 57, were arrested this morning following a search by the Drug Squad in two apartments at Għajnsielem. The police said they elevated five cannabis plants and bags containing cannabis grass. An inquiry is being held.

One dead as car mows down pedestrians in Helsinki

A car has ploughed into a crowd in Finland's capital Helsinki, killing one person and injuring at least four others. Helsinki police said on Twitter on Friday that the Finnish man, in his 50s who was driving the car, was likely under the influence of alcohol or another substance, and was caught immediately afterwards. Police superintendent Patrik Karlsson told Finnish broadcaster YLE that there were no indications the incident was terrorism. Charlie Gard, British baby at heart of dispute, has died

Charlie Gard has died just days ahead of his first birthday from a rare genetic condition, following a legal battle fought by his parents that attracted worldwide attention. PN councillor claims he was vindictively transferred twice

Nationalist Party councillor and environment campaigner Charlot Cassar yesterday resorted to legal avenues after receiving what he described as two “vindictive transfers” in the space of a few days. He explained how from a position with Transport Malta, he soon found himself at the Ministry for European Affairs and Equality and later at the Fisheries Department. Mr Cassar, a Marsascala local councillor who contested the last general election on the PN ticket, said that he had been transferred from Transport Malta without any valid explanation. One dead, four injured after knife attack at Hamburg supermarket

A man armed with a knife has fatally stabbed one person at a supermarket in the German city of Hamburg and wounded four others as he fled. The man was arrested after the incident in the Barmbek district of the northern port city. One person died at the scene after the assailant entered the supermarket, police said. Siġġiewi council objecting to plans to increase size of social housing development

The Siġġiewi local council and residents are objecting to plans to increase the size of a new social housing development which already proved controversial when first proposed and approved. BOV share price drops to near 6-month low

The share index shed 0.52% as it retreated a two-week low of 4,712.325 points today, largely reflecting the declines in the share prices of IHI (-3.2%) and BOV (-0.5%). Trading volumes were weak as only €0.2 million worth of shares changed hands. Following last week’s gain of 0.3%, during the past five trading sessions the local equity index fell by 0.38%. Kappara: Sliema Road, Gżira to open in both directions tomorrow

Vehicles coming from Sliema Road, Gżira will be able to, as from tomorrow, access Triq Mikiel Anton Vassalli. Transport Malta said access was closed at the start of the Kappara Project. Britain's smallest school shuts after only pupil moves on

The smallest school in Britain is to close when its only pupil moves to a secondary school in Mainland Orkney. North Ronaldsay Primary School's single classroom will be kept on "stand-by" from August after Teigan Scott, 12, takes the daily flight to her new school. Spain files legal bid to stop Catalan referendum

Spain's government has lodged a legal bid to stop Catalonia holding an independence referendum, asking the Constitutional Court to veto moves by the regional assembly, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said on Friday. "There will not be any referendum on Oct. 1," Rajoy told a news conference in Madrid after his weekly cabinet meeting. Boat captain denies injuring worker

An attack sparked by a sailor’s mistake led to the arraignment today of a fishing boat captain who pleaded not guilty to grievously injuring the Indonesian worker. Jason Genovese, the 42-year-old captain of the fishing vessel “All Saints,” was charged with grievously injuring Risky Sis Harmawan, causing him to fear violence and relapsing. Slug slime inspires new kind of surgical glue

Scientists have developed an experimental surgical glue inspired by the mucus secreted by slugs that could offer an alternative to sutures and staples for closing wounds. While some medical glues already exist, they often adhere weakly, are not particularly flexible and frequently cannot be used in very wet conditions. Consolidated fund registers €18.6m improvement

The government's consolidated fund registered a positive change of €18.6 million in the first six months of the year, new figures released by the National Statistics Office have shown.  Recurrent revenue rose by more than 10 per cent when compared to the same period last year while total expenditure was up by 9 per cent.
