Drill team takes centre stage for police 203rd anniversary

The police yesterday launched a series of activities to mark their 203rd anniversary. Freedom Square, in Valletta was a hive of activity as the police band, the precision drill team, the dogs unit and the mounted section took centre stage in the morning. They will be in Marsascala this evening and at the Sliema promenade tomorrow at 8.30pm. The police band will be in attendance in Buġibba on Saturday and Mass for the repose of the soul of deceased members of the force will be said on Sunday morning at the Addolorata Cemetery. All Opposition amendments to marriage equality Bill turned down

All amendments to the marriage equality act proposed by the Opposition were turned down today by Parliament’s Committee for the Consideration of Bills. The amendments mainly dealt with the terminology and called for the retainment of the terms mother and father. Mother detained after four children and father found stabbed to death

Police have found four young children and their father apparently stabbed to death in a home in the US state of Georgia and have taken the mother into custody. She was named as a suspect and detained by police after the bodies were found inside the home in Loganville, near Atlanta, Gwinnett County Police said. "She was quickly taken into custody and right now she's at Gwinnett County Police Headquarters being interviewed," Corporal Michele Pihera said. Officers have not said whether the woman was injured. Stricter controls needed to prevent pollution dumping

The authorities should insist the oil treatment facility caught dumping a black liquid in the sea earlier this week should introduce stricter controls, marine biologist Alan Deidun said. The mysterious black liquid, which was video recorded being dumped into the sea near Fort Ricasoli in Kalkara, is being investigated by the Environment and Resources Authority. Farsons climbs to record high

The share index extended yesterday’s gains as it advanced by a further 0.1% to 4,729.757 points, the highest level in over three months. This reflected the increases in the share prices of RS2 (+2.2%) and Farsons (+1.7%) which outweighed the drops in PG (-1.5%), HSBC (-0.5%) and BOV (-0.05%).  Meanwhile, four other shares closed the day unchanged. Valletta shop owner gets compensation for damage from rainwater seepage

The owner of a Valletta shop has been awarded €6,555 by way of compensation for damages suffered on account of rainwater seeping into her property from an overlying rundown palazzo belonging to two foreign nationals. Trouble began back in November 2013 when Anna Maria Vella, who runs the J.A. Vella Households store, discovered that the ceiling was leaking. Lovers' tiff lands man in court

A young man got more than he bargained for when a quarrel with his girlfriend on the streets of Paceville in the early hours of this morning landed him in court to face criminal charges for having allegedly assaulted a third party who intervened to break up the argument. Italian national Alessio Minelli, 25, residing at St Julian's and employed as a chef, was arrested shortly before 4am in Dragonara Road following the brawl which allegedly stemmed from a lovers’ tiff but resulted in a violent brawl. Archbishop testifies in compensation case by victims of clerical sex abuse

Members of the press were this morning asked to leave the courtroom just as Archbishop Charles Scicluna was about to take the witness stand to face cross-examination in the civil proceedings for damages instituted by 10 victims of clerical sex abuse. The civil suit for compensation was filed in May 2013 by Lawrence Grech, Joseph Magro, Leonard Camilleri, David Cassar, Noel Dimech, Angelo Spiteri, Raymond Azzopardi, Charles Falzon, Philip Cauchi and Joseph Mangion. Rather than giving money to beggars who were being seen around Malta and Gozo claiming to be disabled, the public should encourage these people to call the National Commission for Persons with a Disability for information about services they required, the commission said. France to ban diesel and petrol vehicles from 2040

France plans to ban all petrol and diesel vehicles by 2040, the country's new environment minister has announced. The Independent newspaper of the UK said Nicolas Hulot made the announcement as he unveiled a series of measures to make France a carbon neutral country by 2050. One dead as rain floods parts of Japan

One person has been reported dead as record rains batter southwestern Japan for a second day, with flooded rivers forcing 400,000 from their homes.   Residents have recounted horror stories of family members being swept away by the waters, or trees tearing through walls of their residences.  The government rushing to send aid, with hundreds of rescuers mobilized to help with evacuations. Three held for enticing passers-by to illegal games

Three men are under arrest for having attempted to entice pedestrians to play a game of chance, which is illegal, the police said. Two of the arrests were made in Valletta and the third in Paceville. Extension of Fekruna swimming zone under consideration

The swimming zone at Fekruna Bay, in Xemxija, may be extended by the Transport Authority, which is considering moving the boundary buoys further out. Kidney transplant patients to get efficient waiting list system

People on the waiting list for a kidney will benefit from an IT system which will help to determine the best recipient for a particular donor kidney. Money for the system will be raised by the 19th edition of the LifeCycle challenge: 16 cyclists will be leaving soon to cycle for 10 to 12 hours a day for 10 days from Nairobi in Kenya to Dar Es Salaam in Tanzania - a total distance of approximately 1,900km. Bill for learning support assistants rising fast

The government spent €9.21 million on learning support assistants at independent schools between 2011 and 2016, with the spending almost doubling between 2012 and 2013, but still rising steadily since then. Replying to a Parliamentary Question, Education Minister Evarist Bartolo said that this year, until the beginning of July, €1.44 million had already been spent. Dead man identified as Qormi resident

A man whose lifeless body was found on a building site in Qormi yesterday afternoon has been identified as a 43-year-old from Qormi.   The grim discovery was made at about 4 p.m. in Triq il-Mastrudaxxa. The cause of death is also unknown. An autopsy was held this morning but toxicology tests are needed.
