The former deputy head of the colony No. 1 (IK-1) of Yaroslavl, Ivan Kalashnikov, who was involved in the beating of prisoner Yevgeny Makarov in IK-1, died. The man had an oncological disease, which is why the court suspended the consideration of the case against him until he recovered. The man was under recognizance not to leave.
“Kalashnikov died, the case against him was dropped,” Irina Biryukova, lawyer for Mr. Makarov, told TASS.
A criminal case on torture in IK-1 was opened in the summer of 2018 after Novaya Gazeta published a video of the beating of Yevgeny Makarov. The recording was handed over to the journalists by the employees of the Public Verdict. Fifteen former employees of IK-1 were involved in the case of abuse of office. 11 people received real sentences (from three years to four years three months), but the leadership of the Yaroslavl colony was acquitted by the court “in the absence of a crime event”.
