The state corporation Roscosmos has published a photo of the crater on Mars taken in October 2020 from the Trace Gas Orbiter of the Russian-European mission ExoMars-2016.
The photograph shows the southeastern wall of a small crater located several hundred kilometers north of the lowland impact origin of Hellas. The crater diameter is 12 km, the image shows an area of 5×10 km.
The variety of colors in the photograph is explained by the presence of various minerals, which reflect light in different ways at different wavelengths, explained in Roscosmos.
Thus, light-colored deposits indicate the outcropping of bedrocks, which may contain clay minerals formed in the presence of water. The reddish-brown hue of the sandy deposits is due to the presence of iron oxides.
ExoMars is a joint project of Roscosmos and the European Space Research Agency (ESA). In 2016, the Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO) spacecraft and the Schiaparelli landing module were launched. At the second stage of the mission to Mars, it is planned to launch a landing module jointly developed by Rostec and Roscosmos with a European automated rover.
