Parliament this afternoon observed a minute's silence in mourning for the 84 victims of the Nice terrorist attack.
Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said this was an attack which disgusted all decent human beings. It was an attack in which many children died, as well as families who were celebrating the values of freedom, equality and fraternity, on which democracy was built.
The best way how to remember these victims was to hold those values dear, he said.
Dr Muscat said that while countries continued to strengthen their security and intelligence services, one could not stop an attack such as this, where a truck was used. The key was in education and making those involved realise how wrong such actions were.
Mario de Marco, deputy leader of the opposition, said the values which the prime minister had highlighted were relevant now more than ever. Nice, he said, has a large Muslim community which has long co-existed and one could not label people because of the actions of one man. One needed to understand the source of these problems, but not let such acts disrupt ordinary way of life.
