Girl, 12, suffers eye injury in freak accident

Times of Malta 

A 12-year-old girl from Valletta suffered a serious eye injury while in the company of friends at City Gate this evening. She was apparently injured in a freak accident when a key which one of her friends was handling suddenly hit her in an eye. The girl was hospitaised. The police said the accident occurred at about 8.45pm.  They are investigating to establish the facts.

Clinton introduces Kaine to beat Trump

Tim Kaine, the former governor of Virginia and current U.S. Senator, was introduced for the first time by the Democratic presumptive nominee at a rally in Miami, with Clinton saying that Kaine was everything their Republican rivals Donald Trump and Mike Pence were not.  The selection of Kaine, a self-described "boring" Virginian with a reputation for low-key competence, could appeal to independents and moderates, but it quickly angered liberal groups that object to his advocacy for an Asian free-trade pact. Erdogan shuts thousands of schools, charities in first state of emergency decree

President Tayyip Erdogan tightened his grip on Turkey today, ordering the closure of thousands of private schools, charities and other institutions in his first decree since imposing a state of emergency after the failed military coup. A restructuring of Turkey's once untouchable military also drew closer, with a planned meeting between Erdogan and the already purged top brass brought forward by several days. China floods kill 87

Heavy rain in China has killed at least 87 people and forced thousands from their homes, with nearly 80 others missing.   The floods were caused by heavy rains. Some 50,000 homes collapsed. The northern province of Hebei was the worst hit. A breached dyke along the Yangtze inundated an entire industrial park in the region.  Officials said that well over eight and a half million people were affected by the flooding and more than 1.5 million hectares of crops were damaged, costing some 3 billion dollars in losses. Rosberg snatches pole from Hamilton

Nico Rosberg has won pole position for the Hungarian grand prix, snatching the top place from team-mate Lewis Hamilton, who needed to slow because of a yellow flag in the dying second of this afternoon's qualifying session. The session was delayed and interrupted because of heavy rain and a number of crashes, but the track then dried quickly and drivers were able to use their slick tyres for the all important final segment. Chairman of the Commission on Domestic Violence appointed

Joseph Gerada has been appointed chairman of the Commission on Domestic Violence. He currently chairs the Foundation for Social Welfare Services and has represented the government on the Social Affairs Committee of the Council of Europe for the past eight years.  The appointment was made by the Minister for Social Dialogue and Civil Liberties Helena Dalli.

Slime hits southern bays again

The bays at Kalanka and St Peter’s Pool in Delimara were yesterday again filled with a slew of greasy slime locals are convinced emanates from the fish farms in the vicinity. Regular visitors to the area have observed there is a pattern as to when the slime appears. In the early hours of the morning, the beaches boast crystal clear blue waters. Canadian-born man charged with cannabis trafficking

A 37 year-old Canadian-born man from Siggiewi has been charge in connection with the discovery of half a kilo of cannabis grass as well as 30 metre-high cannabis plants. Michael Brandon Calleja, who is unemployed, was charged this afternoon before Magistrate Doreen Clarke and pleaded not guilty. He was denied bail due to an ongoing investigation and fears of tampering of evidence. Elderly man hit by motorcycle

A 72-year-old man was seriously injured this morning when he was hit by a motorcycle in St Joseph High Road, Hamrun. The police said the accident happened at about 9.30am. The Symphony SR motorcycle was being driven by a 25-year-old man from Qormi.

Sunderland appoint Moyes as Allardyce's replacement

Sunderland appointed David Moyes as their new manager today, replacing Sam Allardyce who has taken charge of the England team. The 53-year-old Moyes, who has been without a club since being sacked by Spanish side Real Sociedad in November, has signed a four-year contract at the Stadium of Light, the Premier League club said in a statement. Young man critical after falling in field

A 27-year-old man is in critical condition after falling a height of some five metres into a field on the outskirts of Rabat this morning. The man, who is from Lija, had been walking on a country road near an entertainment venue at about 10.15 when he fell into the field. He was found unconscious.  A magisterial inquiry is under way.

PM’s trips in private jet cost EU, Malta €1.2 million

Almost €1.2 million were spent on 34 private jet trips to ferry Prime Minister Joseph Muscat and his delegation on official trips abroad. Each trip cost an average of €35,000 with the EU refunding 80 per cent of any travel costs connected to EU summits and related events. This means the State pays an average €7,000 per trip for the plane that can take up to nine people. Talks for Alitalia to become an Air Malta strategic partner and 49 per cent shareholder are proceeding at a strong pace, but the deal will not go ahead unless it is beneficial for the Maltese airline, the prime minister said. "Every side in talks pulls towards its interests, we will not go bowl in hand to Alitalia, we will seek our interests, and if it suits us we will go forward. The Malta police have issued a video to warn against sexual blackmail on the internet. An average of three people per week reported attempts of sexual blackmail in the first half of this year. Most were men aged between 18 and 50. Tense calm settles on Munich, attack motive still unknown

A tense calm has settled over Munich after an 18-year-old German-Iranian gunman opened fire in a busy shopping mall yesterday, killing at least nine people. The motive is still unknown. The pistol-wielding attacker, identified by Munich Police Chief Hubertus Andrae a dual national, was later found dead of a suspected self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head. Russian balloonist claims round the world record

Russian balloonist Fedor Konyukhov has claimed a new round the world record of 11 days. Support crew member Steve Griffin says his balloon this morning passed directly over the airfield at the Australian town of Northam where he began his journey on July 12. American Steve Fossett also started from Northam to set a record of 13 days and eight hours for his 21,000-mile journey in 2002. Mr Konyukhov has taken roughly 11 days and six hours. Government unaware of new oil smuggling claims from Libya

The government said yesterday it did not receive any communication from the Libyan Parliament on fresh claims of oil and fuel smuggling from the North African country. However, the Foreign Affairs Ministry did not comment on claims of rampant oil smuggling from Libya to Malta, which has allegedly been going on since the collapse of the Gaddafi regime. A diver whose video footage had raised the alarm about dangerous spikes along an underwater path to Qawra pool, has uploaded another video showing the remedial action and declaring the place safe. Trucks destroyed in Mosta garage blaze

Trucks and other commercial vehicles were destroyed in a fierce fire in a garage in Mosta early this morning. The Civil Protection Department deployed several fire-fighting vehicles manned by 11 fire-fighters to fight the blaze in Carmelo Dimech Street. No one was injured but neighbours were evacuated.
