Men dressed as First World War soldiers turned up unannounced in towns and train stations across Britain yesterday to mark 100 years since the start of the Battle of the Somme. Travelling by train and the London Underground, the imitation soldiers surprised onlookers by stopping to pose and sing wartime songs in cities including London, Belfast, Sheffield, Manchester and Glasgow. A white ruffled shirt worn by Prince in Purple Rain has sold at auction for 32 times its asking price, fetching nearly $100,000. The New Romantic-style ivory silk shirt and a black-and-white blazer from the 1984 film sold for $96,000 each at the sale in California. Calls to give dual citizenship to Britons living in Germany, Italy or France

Germany's vice chancellor said Britons living in the European Union should be given dual citizenship so they can stay when their country leaves the bloc. Sigmar Gabriel said on Saturday at a meeting of his centre-left Social Democratic Party in Berlin that Britain's referendum decision to quit the EU was a further reason to campaign to relax the rules on dual citizenship in Germany. Malta does not meet minimum US standards for the elimination of human trafficking, but significant efforts have been made, according to a State Department report. “Women from Southeast Asia working as domestic workers, Chinese nationals working in massage parlours and women from Central and Eastern Europe working in nightclubs represent populations vulnerable to exploitation,” the report notes. Egyptair crash probe: investigators gain access to cockpit voice recorder

Egyptian investigators have managed to access the cockpit voice recorder of the EgyptAir flight that crashed in May after finding the memory chips are intact. In a statement today, investigators said the "test results were satisfactory as it enabled the reading of the recorders of the CVR memory unit" in France, where the plane's black boxes are being examined. An NGO has applauded the Planning Authority's decision to shoot down the proposed development at Gozo's Hondoq ir-Rummien. Girl, 8, and father injured in Mgarr accident

An eight-year-old girl and her 42-year-old father were rushed to hospital following a head-on crash in Mgarr this morning.  The accident happened at 11.30am on Triq Sir Temi Zammit when a truck driven by a 42-year-old in Birkirkara was involved in the crash with a Toyota Vitz driven by the man from Iklin, police said. The cause of the accident is not yet known. The driver and his daughter were taken to hospital, as was another eight-year-old girl in the car, but who is not believed to have sustained any injuries.
