May leads three-horse PM race as Brexit hits pound and property

Home Secretary Theresa May opened up a strong lead today in what is now a three-horse race to become Britain's next prime minister, but the first stage of voting was overshadowed by post-Brexit carnage for property investors and the pound. New Zealand Police recruitment crew proved they’ve got some moves during a surprise performance in a Hip Hop Unite Championship in Wellington, New Zealand. A video posted to Youtube starts with the show host holding what he claims to be a found wallet. Valletta, Birkirkara make it to second qualifying rounds

Updated - Valletta and Birkirkara have qualified for the second qualifying rounds of the Champions League and the Europa League respectively. Valletta qualified by virtue of the away goal when they lost 2-1 to B36 Torshavn - the aggregate being 2-2. The Citizens travelled to the Faroe Islands holding a slight edge over their Nordic opponents after winning last week’s opening leg at the Hibs Stadium 1-0. Opposition leader Simon Busuttil laid flowers today on the monument to former Prime Minister George Borg Olivier to mark the 105th anniversary of his birth.  Dr Borg Olivier, who led Malta to Independence, died in 1980. He was PN leader between 1950 and 1977.

Qormi murder - Victim's husband turns himself in

A man wanted by the police for questioning in connection with the murder of his wife turned himself in today.  Eleanor Mangion Walker was found dead in a warehouse in Qormi late on Sunday after a police search sparked by a tip-off. The police had since been seeking her husband, Andrew Mangion, who they regraded as the prime suspect. Mr Mangion and his wife had been going through separation proceedings. 15 drug finds in prison this year

BOV Premier League to increase to 14 teams

FBI says Clinton should not be prosecuted over email server

Updated 5.50pm - Add Trump reaction The FBI will recommend to the Justice Department that no prosecution is warranted as a result of its yearlong investigation into Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server while secretary of state, agency director James Comey said. Comey said the probe found there was evidence of extremely careless handling of emails by Clinton, now the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, and that at least 110 emails contained classified information at the time they were sent. New CEO at Foundation for Medical Services

Carmen Ciantar has been appointed Chief Executive of the Foundation for Medical Services. She was formerly CEO at Arms Ltd, a an executive officer at the Malta Tourism Authority and a director at Transport Malta.  Ms Ciantar holds a commerce degree from the University of Malta. She followed a post-graduate course in education and also holds a diploma  in management from Henley Institute of Management. She achieved a masters in 2013.

Third UK commercial fund suspends trading

M&G, the fund management arm of insurer Prudential, has suspended trading in its £4.4 billion ($5.74 billion) UK property portfolio and feeder fund, the firm said today. The fund is the third UK commercial property fund to be suspended this week. "Investor redemptions in the fund have risen markedly because of the high levels of uncertainty in the UK commercial property market since the outcome of the European Union referendum," M&G said in a statement. EgyptAir voice recorder indicates attempt to put out fire before crash

Audio from the flight deck voice recorder of EgyptAir MS804 indicates an attempt to put out a fire on board the jet before it crashed into the Mediterranean, sources on the investigation committee said on Tuesday. The Airbus A320 plunged into the eastern Mediterranean en route from Paris to Cairo on May 19. All 66 people on board were killed. The cause of the crash remains unknown. Pictures - Car crashes onto Għar id-Dud promenade

People rushed out of the way in shock this afternoon as a car climbed the popular promenade at Għar id-Dud in Sliema, apparently because of brake failure. The accident happened at about 4.20pm and involved a white VW Beetle. Two benches were damaged as the car crashed across the promenade, coming to rest along the railings. UK pump prices rise for fourth month in a row

Motorists in the UK have been hit with rising fuel prices for four months in a row, new figures show. In June unleaded went up by 1.5 pence per litre (ppl) and diesel by 1.66 ppl, according to the RAC. The impact of the 11% fall in the value of the pound after the EU referendum was softened by a 6% fall in the oil price. Historic Mellieħa Bay building propped up by concrete blocks

The first coastal defence battery to be overrun by the invading French in 1798 is at risk of collapse, and Mellieħa local council has been trying to save it for over a year. Huge concrete blocks were piled on top of each other on all sides of the Tunnara battery in Għadira Bay a year ago, in an emergency measure. Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said he was worried about the future of the Premier League and the damage it could suffer as Britain prepared to face the consequences of leaving the European Union (EU). Dock 7 to be closed to traffic from Friday

A Dock 7 road opened to traffic some months ago will be closed to all vehicles as of this coming Friday, Transport Malta has announced.  Commuters who usually use the road have been urged to use St Paul Boffa Avenue in Paola instead, with Transport Malta saying it had introduced a tidal system on the road to ensure another lane was available during peak hours.  The road closure is down to construction of the Mediterranean Maritime Hub entering a new phase. New €50 note to include a shiny "emerald number"

The euro's most widely used banknote is about to get a security upgrade.  A new €50 banknote incorporating state-of-the-art security features allowing users to verify a note's authenticity using "feel, look, tilt" methods was unveiled by the European Central Bank today. The note, which will enter circulation on April 4, is part of the ECB's second generation of euro banknotes, and follows second series €5, €10 and €20 notes. Cheese heist

Twenty thousand pounds of cheese have been stolen in south-western Wisconsin, police said. The cheese, produced by US Foods, was in a semi-trailer parked at a business in the Milwaukee suburb of Oak Creek when it went missing on Thursday. Police said the driver was transporting the load from Green Bay to the New York City area and unhitched the trailer to run an errand. Officers apprehend thief during Police Day celebrations

Officers attending Police Day celebrations in Valletta yesterday ended up giving a live demonstration of their job when they apprehended a 17-year-old girl who nicked a wallet from an elderly woman's handbag.
