Canadian woman fires at Pokemon GO players

A Canadian woman has been charged after she allegedly fired a pellet gun at Pokemon GO players from the rooftop of a Toronto-area home. Witnesses saw the 29-year-old woman fire at least four shots on Saturday night from the roof of a two-story building, police said in a statement, adding that no players were injured. A police spokesman said part of the street in the town of Newmarket, north of Toronto, had possibly been marked in the augmented reality game as a "gym," where players gather to challenge each other. Sanders booed as he calls for support of Clinton and Kaine

Senator Bernie Sanders has called on his supporters to back Hillary Clinton in the Presidential race telling supporters who were cheering him on, "This is the real world that we live in." Sanders speaking in Philadelphia called Trump "a bully and a demagogue." He said Trump has made "bigotry and hatred the cornerstone of his campaign." and called him a "danger" for the future of the United States, that "must be defeated." ‘Exam-heavy education system is failing’ – MUT

Malta’s exam-heavy educational system is failing, Malta Union of Teachers (MUT) president Kevin Bonello said in reaction to a survey published last week showing that students are not being equipped with the necessary skills for working life. The survey, carried out by the National Commission for Further and Higher Education, found that poor writing skills are making it hard for employers to fill vacancies. Prime Minister lists wife's travel

Prime Minister Joseph Muscat this afternoon listed occasions where his wife travelled on official business abroad without him, and said the same procedures are being followed as in the past. Replying to a question in Parliament by Nationalist MP David Agius,  Dr Muscat said that since March 2013 his wife had travelled abroad nine times when he was not present. Church reacts to euthanasia debate - will set up Home to provide palliative care

The Church is to set up a Home to provide palliative care  for people suffering terminal illnesses and is currently looking for a place where to site it, the Curia announced this afternoon. The decision was taken by Archbishop Charles J. Scicluna. The service will be provided by a registered foundation in collaboration with other entities involved in this sector. MPs observe minute's silence for terrorism victims

MPs this afternoon observed a minute's silence out of respect for the victims of terrorism in Munich and Afghanistan. Nine people died in a shooting incident in Munich on Friday and 80 people were killed in a suicide attack in Kabul on Saturday. The Speaker, Anglu Farrugia, expressed the regret of the House.

Parents locked child in dog cage, US court told

A couple in Pennsylvania locked their children in a basement dog cage as punishment and even left their six-year-old inside a cage overnight. Thirty-six-year-old Nicholas Chamberlain and 34-year-old Linda Chamberlain were charged on Friday, said police. State police troopers said the investigation began on June 19 when police responded to a call of a child refusing to return home in Huntingdon County. Police said the couple's 13-year-old child escaped to a neighbour's house to call police after the six-year-old was locked in the cage overnight.

Prince Harry regrets not talking sooner about Diana's death

Britain's Prince Harry has spoken about how he regrets not talking sooner about the impact of the death of his mother, Princess Diana. Diana died in a car crash in Paris in 1997, when Harry was 12 and his brother Prince William was 15. Harry, now 31 and fifth in line to the throne, said he had not discussed his mother's death until three years ago, the BBC reported. "I really regret not talking about it," he said. Suicide bomber had pledged allegiance to Islamic State - Germany steps up security

Updated 3.26pm - A 27-year-old Syrian man who blew himself up and injured 12 people in Germany last night had pledged allegiance to Islamic State, the Bavarian interior minister said this afternoon. The man was denied asylum in Germany a year ago. He set off a bomb outside a crowded music festival in Bavaria, the fourth violent attack in Germany in less than a week. MSE Share Index drops to a 5-week low

The MSE Share Index slipped by a further 0.05% to a five-week low of 4,463.750 points. Helene Pellicano  has become the first Maltese player ever to win the European tennis Junior Championships, beating Denisa Hindova of the Czech Republic.   The win was a fourth straight sets victory of the week for Pellicano, whose only struggle came in a marathon semi-final against Croatia’s Noa Krznaric, in which she was forced to battle back from the brink of defeat before securing a 2-6 7-6(4) 6-4 win. 650 Maltese in Poland for Youth Day events

Some 650 Maltese are in Poland for the Church's World Youth Day events which open tomorrow and end on Sunday with Mass by Pope Francis. The Maltese youths come from 23 religious organizations. They visit has been coordinated by the Catholic Action Youths (ZAK). Archbishop Charles J Scicluna met the youths in meetings organised by ZAK and the Neocatechumenal Way. He urged them to use this experience to let the Lord show them was he wanted of them and to be apostles of Christ.

GO Foundation's members reject deal with government, ministry refuses to liquidate fund

The government said today that it cannot uphold a call by members of the GO Employees Foundation to dissolve its pension fund and distribute the money among existing workers, because this would go against the purposes for which the fund was set up, and constitute a crime. In a statement, the Ministry of Finance explained  that over the past few months it had been holding talks with the foundation for a way to be found for a sustainable future for the fund and for with justice for existing and former workers. Japanese company develops armpit fans to help keep cool in summer

A Japanese company has developed a solution to keep cool during summer heat: an armpit fan. The device is a miniature clip-on fan that can be clipped onto shirt sleeves. The fan, called Under the Armpit Cooling Device (Waki no Shita Kura in Japanese) circulates cool air through the users’ clothes at three adjustable speeds, keeping the user cool at all times. Teen trespassers at disused hotel destroying furnishings

The disused Holiday Inn Hotel in Sliema is again attracting teenage trespassers who have now resorted to throwing furniture and glass from the balconies to the alarm of neighbours. Readers flagged the trespassing when spotting a group of teenagers walking around the abandoned rooms, destroying furnishings, and even tossing out furniture or glass over the balustrades. First baby with Zika-related birth defect born in New York City

New York City has reported its first case of a baby born with the birth defect microcephaly related to exposure to the Zika virus, health officials said. New York City Department of Health officials said the baby's mother was infected after travelling to an area with ongoing Zika transmission. Hotel guests, bednights, show slight decline in May

Total guests and nights spent in hotels during May declined by 0.5 and 0.1 per cent respectively when compared to the corresponding month in 2015, the NSO said today. Total guests numbered 153,659, while total nights spent amounted to 826,971. Five-star and 3-star hotel categories registered decreases in total nights spent, with increases being recorded in the other categories.
