France end Iceland's dream run with 5-2 rout

Hosts France brought Iceland's dream Euro 2016 run to a grinding halt when they demolished the outsiders 5-2 in their Euro 2016 quarter-final to earn a mouth-watering last four meeting with Germany. Iceland's resistance was broken after 12 minutes when Blaise Matuidi's pass over Iceland's defence sent Olivier Giroud clear and he placed an angled shot past keeper Hannes Halldorsson. Watch: Car turns into a fireball in Tarxien

A car went up in flames in a Tarxien street this evening.  The car is believed to have been parked at the end of Triq Pietro Gagliardi when it caught fire at around 10.20pm, sources said.  Nobody was hurt and the flames were put out by a fire engine that was rushed to the street. Police sources said they were not suspecting foul play at this point in time. The above video was sent to Times of Malta by a witness at the scene. In it, a fire engine can be seen arriving as the car blazes on the side of the road.

Women's national basketball team wins gold at Small Countries European Championship

Malta's national basketball team won the 2016 FIBA Small Countries Women's European Championship today after beating Ireland 67-59 in the final.  Ireland started strongly and were ahead 27-19 at the end of the first quarter. But Malta gradually got into the game and clawed back the deficit. They trailed the Irish with 7 minutes remaining on the clock but rallied strongly to win and take home the gold medal.  The Irish basketball federation was sporting in defeat, saying Malta had been "excellent" and congratulating them on the win. Tourist, 19, critically hurt in blast in New York's Central Park

A 19-year-old tourist suffered a severe injury to his left foot in an explosion in Central Park, said a spokesman for the New York Police Department, which was investigating the cause of the incident. The teen was in the park with two friends, who had also travelled to New York, when the blast occurred just before 11 am near East 61st Street and East Drive, the NYPD spokesman said. Tax haven route won't work for post-Brexit UK, says OECD

The United Kingdom is unlikely to try to lure international investment by becoming a tax haven after it leaves the European Union, according to an internal memo prepared by the body responsible for the drafting international tax rules. The head of tax at the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, which advises developed nations on policy, said the UK could use its freedom from EU rules to slash corporate tax but the political price would be high. Seriously injured after crashing into a ditch

A man was seriously injured this afternoon after crashing his car into a ditch in Zabbar.  The incident occurred at around 1.40pm, police said, on Triq Santa Duminka.  An ambulance rushed the man, a 34-year-old Cospicua resident, to Mater Dei hospital for treatment. Although his injuries are serious, they are not life-threatening.  An investigation is underway, police said.

Eight Cuba volleyball players detained in Finland over suspected rape

Eight Cuba national team volleyball players have been detained over a suspected rape in Finland, police said today. According to central Finland police three of the players were apprehended on Saturday, and five on Sunday. The Cuban men's team was playing in a World League tournament in the city of Tampere in central Finland. The police gave no further information about the suspected rape. Finnish news agency STT reported the incident occurred at a hotel in Tampere, where the Cuban team was staying.

A man in the US city of Albuquerque, New Mexico was blown away when he stepped out of his home one morning to discover mystery thieves had stolen his roof.  All Cory Archuleta roof's shingles had been torn off and cleaned up. At least 8 dead after Russian plane crashes in Siberia

At least eight people have died after a Russian plane on a fire-fighting mission crashed in Siberia, Russian news agencies have reported. Rescue workers found the Ilyushin Il-76 cargo plane in the early hours of Sunday morning in Russia's Irkutsk region, according to a statement on the Emergency Situations Ministry website.
