Employers not yet told how to apply for maternity refunds

Employers are still waiting for instructions on how to apply for refunds for their contributions to the Maternity Leave Trust Fund launched a year ago, it has emerged. The fund, launched in July last year, was set up by the government in an attempt to end gender discrimination. Employers across the board contribute the equivalent of 0.3 per cent of the basic pay for every employee, irrespective of their gender, to build up the fund. Student awarded €9.4 million after chicken costume cost him brain injury

A man from Californian man who was beaten up while wearing a chicken suit in 2010 has been awarded €9.4 million in a lawsuit. Mitch Carter, then a 17-year-old student at Bakersfield High School, wore a chicken suit during a school pep rally to mock the Golden Hawk mascot of a rival school football team.  After he was hit and knocked over by two students, he told a school administrator he wanted to remove the costume. 32 million trips made by tallinja card holders in a year

A total 240,000 people have a tallinja card, Malta Public Transport said today on the first anniversary of the card’s launch. Commercial director Daniel Grech said that in its first year the company registered over 32 million trips made by passengers using tallinja cards. The company identified the most frequent traveller in each tallinja card category: adult, student, child, concession and Gozo and has offered them the opportunity to travel by bus for free for a year. Policemen injured as they tried to stop argument in Cospicua

A police sergeant and a constable were injured when they intervened to stop an argument in Cospicua this evening. The sergeant was grievously injured, the constable slightly. The police said the incident happened at the area known as the St Paul’s Bastion just before 5pm. Officers from the Rapid Intervention Unit went on site to find that the situation had calmed down but it erupted again when the officers were there. Octogenarian 'cowboy' arrested

New York City police have arrested an 80-year-old man who gained national fame by riding his horse around the country saying he was a cowboy who wanted to help hungry children. Police say Tod "Doc" Mishler was taken into custody yesterday, three days after riding his horse across the Outerbridge Crossing linking New Jersey with Staten Island. The University should seek to recruit more international students who are willing to pay for admittance, newly-appointed Rector Alfred Vella said yesterday, as this would make the institution more financially sustainable. Researchers have found the first evidence that the thinning of the ozone layer above Antarctica is starting to heal, according to the BBC. Observations and calculations indicate that, in September, the hole in ozone layer above Antarctica was around 4 million square kilometres smaller than it was in 2000. An emergency physician response unit set up for serious incidents and cases which involve a lot of people in May had already taken part in 19 incidents, Health Minister Chris Fearne said today. Young man jailed for stealing from restaurant 'did not learn a thing'

A 20-year-old youth was today jailed for 13 months after he admitted stealing from a restaurant in Għar Lapsi last month. Keithien Borg, from Ħamrun, was also charged with damaging third party property, breaching three probation orders and relapsing. His accomplice, a 17-year-old teenager, who cannot be named by court order, was last week spared jail in favour of an 18-month probation order. The government has started the tendering process for repair works at the Ta’ Qali pitkali site, so that urgent structural work could kick off as soon as possible, Parliamentary Secretary Roderick Galdes said yesterday. The share index trended higher for the third consecutive trading session today to reach the highest level in two months of 4,578.915 points (+0.38 per cent). The local equity index registered its best weekly performance this year with a rise of 2.2 per cent. The best performing equity today was RS2 Software. Refugee finds €150,000 in a cupboard, and gives it back

A 25-year-old man was appointed the “hero of the day” in Germany after he found €150,000 which he then gave to the authorities. Minden police said he found about €50,000 in cash and saving books that contained more than €100,000, while he was assembling the furniture. The money was hidden under a board. Police in the German town of Minden said they gave the unidentified man the informal title because while small amounts of cash are regularly handed in to authorities, "such a large sum is the absolute exception". Paris has banned old, exhaust-belching cars from its streets in a war on air pollution that environmentalists hope will also drive dirty vehicles from the centres of other European cities. Air pollution, in large part caused by fine particulate fuel emissions, kills 48,000 people each year in France, some 400,000 in Europe and around 3.7 million worldwide, data published by France's public health agency this month showed.
