Hotelier Silvio Debono’s plans to build a new beach lido in Bugibba and excavate a tunnel linking to the San Antonio Hotel received the green light from the Planning Authority earlier today. Discovery rewrites Australia's human history

Times of Malta

Axeheads and grinding stones from a cave in Australia's far north suggest humans arrived on the continent about 65,000 years ago, or 18,000 years earlier than previously thought, according to research published on Thursday. A technique called luminescence dating was used to date the ancient tools which were found in a rock shelter at the bottom of a cliff, on the edge of a sandy savannah plain some 300 km (186 miles) east of Darwin. Tesla’s turnaround summer

Times of Malta

Tesla will start delivering the first of its Model 3 cars in the coming months. The Model 3 is Tesla's most important model to date since it is the first real mass market car to emerge from the auto company. Success for the Model will go a long way in appeasing investors that continue to believe in the dream created by Elon Musk. However, the dream to date has a few hiccups. One important hiccup is that to-date Tesla has not made a cent. That being said, the share price still increased by 850 per cent in the past five years. Читать дальше...

Traffic frustration in Gżira driving drivers, residents round the bend

Times of Malta

Traffic problems in Gżira have become a major cause of frustration for both residents and motorists, with long tailbacks all the way up Testaferrata Street as vehicles head towards Sliema. Apart from having to run the gauntlet of construction and roadworks throughout the locality and the surrounding areas, motorists’ frustrations peak when the two-lane road leading from Testaferrata Street to the Gżira Strand funnels into one. Instead of using the outer lane to turn towards Ta’ Xbiex, drivers often... Читать дальше...

Renewed volatility in MGS prices

Times of Malta

On March 16, I had written an article entitled ‘MGS sell-off gathers momentum’ in which I had explained how the overall downward trend in the prices of Malta Government Stocks (MGSs) had persisted in the first few months of 2017 following the initial slump triggered by the election of Donald Trump as President of the US in early November 2016. Indeed, the Rizzo Farrugia MGS Index – which gauges the daily movements in the indicative opening bid prices of MGSs quoted by the Central Bank of Malta (CBM) ... Читать дальше...

Shadows from the past: Port Vale in Malta for Floriana celebrations

Times of Malta

In 1974-75 Floriana celebrated their 75th anniversary. That season, the Greens won the championship after a long struggle with their oldest rivals, St George’s.  In those days, the Saints had a formidable team. It was probably the best since the heady days of the Mile End Sports Ground. In the end, however, Floriana  once again jinxed the Saints to add another championship to their tally.  During that campaign, three foreign teams paid a short visit to Malta. Early in 1974, the Italian amateur club... Читать дальше...

A reliable balance sheet

Times of Malta

A growing number of governments are moving away from cash to accrual accounting. Private companies adopted accrual accounting more than a century ago because it was considered to be a better way of reporting their financial activities and results. Under cash accounting, transactions are recognised only when the associated cash is received or paid and economic events are not reported if there is no immediate exchange of cash. A 2016 IMF report said that governments were tempted to exploit the system... Читать дальше...

Watch: Woman marries calf, believing him to be her husband reincarnated

Times of Malta

For one calf in rural Cambodia who popped out near the home of the recently-widowed Khim Hang, being (re)born was much like hitting the jackpot. The 74-year-old woman has taken the calf under her wing, believing him to be the reincarnate of her husband Tol Khut, a Cambodian farmer who died unexpectedly just over a year ago in Cambodia's northeastern Kratie Province. She is not the only one to hold this belief - so too do her seven children and her neighbours. Inside the wooden stilted house, the calf is fed... Читать дальше...
