In the late 1960s, a mysterious, aphorism-spouting cartoon character by the name of Mr. Natural — part con man, part saint — became a favorite counterculture guru. Wisely practical yet frustratingly ludicrous, he was spawned from the brain of underground San Francisco "commix" icon Robert Crumb in 1966. But what most fans have overlooked is that Mr. Natural is an actual living person who has run a music school in San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury District for more than 30 years.

By 1937, the citizens of San Francisco were fed up with perpetual traffic jams. The town was considering a subway system, and calling for an "end to the Toonerville folly." In November of that year, they would put it to the vote with Proposition No. 1. An article in the Chronicle, dated October 28, 1937, described how every streetcar was like the proverbial sardine can. RIGA, Latvia (AP) — The prime minister of Latvia says the country's top central banker has been detained following questions from the national anti-corruption agency. Maris Kucinskis issued a statement Sunday confirming that Ilmars Rimsevics, a policymaker of the European Central Bank, was detained. On Saturday evening, Latvian state TV showed Rimsevics arriving by car to the anti-corruption agency and leaving hours later. CAIRO (AP) — Egypt's Foreign Ministry says it accepts Ethiopia's request to delay a meeting about a dam that Ethiopia is building on the Blue Nile River, after Addis Ababa declared a state of emergency amid the worst anti-government protests in decades. TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — An Iranian commercial plane crashed on Sunday in a foggy, mountainous region of southern Iran, killing all 66 people on board, state media reported. An Aseman Airlines ATR-72, a twin-engine turboprop used for short-distance regional flying, went down near its destination of the southern Iranian city of Yasuj, some 780 kilometers (485 miles) south of the Iranian capital, Tehran.
