«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Uber is paying $245 million to Google's self-driving car spinoff to end a legal brawl that aired out allegations of a sinister scheme that tore apart the once-friendly companies. The surprise settlement announced Friday came as lawyers for Uber and Waymo, a company hatched from Google, prepared to wrap up the first week of a trial that had attracted international attention. «SFGate» (sfgate.com)

The cast of “Black Panther” has addressed the alt-right banned Facebook group that was seeking to rig the film’s audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, and based on the responses, the cast isn’t sweating about the haters. “Everybody is just focused forward. Those people are at the back,” said Letitia Wright of the group. “I definitely thought about it, and I think you don’t really know how big of an impact that’s going to be,” added “Black Panther” headliner Chadwick Boseman. So whatever they do online doesn’t really matter.

A budget the likes of which the Pentagon has never seen

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

WASHINGTON (AP) — The newly agreed $700 billion Pentagon budget is the biggest the military has ever seen. It's far more in defense spending than America's two nearest competitors, China and Russia, and will mean the military can foot the bill for thousands more troops, more training, more ships and a lot else. And next year it would rise to $716 billion. President Donald Trump signed the two-year deal Friday. It provides what Defense Secretary Jim Mattis says is needed to pull the military out of... «SFGate» (sfgate.com)

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — South Dakota's House speaker says a voter-approved constitutional "bill of rights" for crime victims could be changed rather than repealed, opening the way for a potential deal with the group that pushed for its passage. Republican Rep. Mark Mickelson and others earlier this legislative session proposed repealing the "Marsy's Law" amendment and instead strengthening victims' rights in state law. But Mickelson and campaign group Marsy's Law for All have been negotiating about revising provisions of the amendment. Читать дальше...

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

NEW YORK (AP) — Jordan-based Arab Bank say it's thankful a New York court ruling brings to a close a civil case American victims of suicide bombings had filed against it. A federal appeals court in Manhattan issued a written ruling Friday rejecting a 2014 jury verdict in the case. The decision concluded the jury was instructed improperly and normally would have set the stage for a retrial, but the litigants negotiated how to settle the case under terms dictated by how the appeals court ruled. CHICAGO (AP) — Thousands of children in the Midwest got a rare snow day off school Friday as a winter storm moved through the Great Lakes region, dumping nearly a foot of the white powder in some places with more on the way. Midwest residents often boast that they are well prepared for winter weather and school is rarely called off. But the threat of the largest snowstorm of the season prompted school districts in Chicago, Detroit and Milwaukee to cancel classes Friday. Schools across Nebraska and... Читать дальше...

Simple sketch helps police ID market theft suspect

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

LANCASTER, Pa. (AP) — Police say an extremely simple sketch helped investigators identify a suspect in a theft from a Pennsylvania farmers market. Lancaster police say the suspect pretended to be an employee before stealing an undisclosed amount in cash from a stand inside Central Market last month. A witness provided the minimalist black-and-white drawing to officers. Police say while the sketch was cartoonish, it helped remind an investigator of a potential suspect. A photo of the suspect was given to the witness... Читать дальше...

‘Daphne,’ by Will Boast

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

If you have only a glancing knowledge of Greek myth, Roman poetry or the sculptural masterpieces of Gian Lorenzo Bernini, then you know the story of Daphne and Apollo: Struck by vindictive Cupid’s arrow, the god chases the nymph. She cries out to her father, the river god Peneus, to save her — which he does by turning her into a laurel tree. “A heavy numbness seized her limbs, thin bark closed over her breast, her hair turned into leaves, her arm into branches, her feet so swift a moment ago stuck fast in slow-growing roots,” as the Ovid goes.
