DEDHAM, Maine (AP) — A Maine man says he punched and kicked a 150-pound bear, scaring it away after it attacked his puppy in the woods. Twenty-nine-year-old Dustin Gray said the bear lunged at him and his 11-month-old puppy on Monday. The 6-foot-5 man tells the Bangor Daily News that he punched and kicked the bear until it fled and knocked him over in the process. CLINTON, Iowa (AP) — The remains of a trumpeter swan are being analyzed in hopes of solving the mystery of what killed 32 of the rare birds in western Clinton County. The Quad-City Times reports a hunter found remains of the birds on Jan. 30 in a privately owned wetland area. PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — South Dakota's House speaker says a voter-approved constitutional "bill of rights" for crime victims could be changed rather than repealed, opening the way for a potential deal with the group that pushed for its passage. Republican Rep. Mark Mickelson and others earlier this legislative session proposed repealing the "Marsy's Law" amendment and instead strengthening victims' rights in state law. OXFORD, Maine (AP) — Maine State Police say a man from the town of Mexico is charged with threatening the newly appointed sheriff in Oxford County. Police say 56-year-old Joseph Salatka was charged with one count of terrorizing after he made threats against Oxford County Sheriff James Theriault. Theriault was appointed by Gov. Paul LePage after Wayne Gallant resigned amid a sexting scandal. Police say Salatka made the threat in a phone call to the state fire marshal's office. NEW YORK (AP) — Jordan-based Arab Bank say it's thankful a New York court ruling brings to a close a civil case American victims of suicide bombings had filed against it. A federal appeals court in Manhattan issued a written ruling Friday rejecting a 2014 jury verdict in the case. RAHWAY, N.J. (AP) — Authorities say a man who distributed fentanyl-laced crack cocaine that killed three people and sent numerous others to the hospital on a single day late last year is now facing several charges. Union County prosecutors say 38-year-old George Rayford, of Rahway, faces three counts of strict liability for a drug-induced death and nine drug distribution charges. LANCASTER, Pa. (AP) — Police say an extremely simple sketch helped investigators identify a suspect in a theft from a Pennsylvania farmers market. Lancaster police say the suspect pretended to be an employee before stealing an undisclosed amount in cash from a stand inside Central Market last month. San Francisco’s bomb squad rushed to the corner of 17th and Shrader streets Friday morning after trash collectors stumbled upon a grenade during a scheduled pickup. SEATTLE (AP) — A federal judge has blocked the University of Washington from billing the College Republicans a $17,000 security fee for a campus rally on grounds that it violates free speech rights. The Seattle Times reports that U.S. District Court Judge Marsha Pechman made the order Friday. After the student Republican group holds its event, lawyers for both sides are expected back in court for a preliminary injunction hearing to determine whether the UW's policy for billing this and other such events are constitutional. CHICAGO (AP) — The Latest on a winter storm affecting parts of the U.S. (all times local): 2:10 p.m. A section of Interstate 94 in southwestern Michigan was blocked after dozens of vehicles crashed amid heavy snowfall. Michigan State Police said about 50 vehicles were involved in the Friday afternoon pileup in the highway's eastbound lanes just east of Kalamazoo.
