2nd federal court rejects Trump’s travel ban

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

WASHINGTON — A second federal appeals court ruled Thursday against President Trump’s latest effort to limit travel from countries said to pose a threat to the nation’s security. The decision, from the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, in Richmond, Va., will have no immediate practical impact. The Supreme Court agreed last month to hear an appeal from a broadly similar decision from the 9th Circuit, in San Francisco. In December, in a sign that the Supreme Court... Читать дальше...

Senate rejects immigration plan by bipartisan senators

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

WASHINGTON (AP) — A divided Senate rejected a bipartisan plan Thursday to help young "Dreamer" immigrants and parcel out money for the wall President Donald Trump wants with Mexico, as Republican leaders joined with the White House and scuttled what seemed the likeliest chance for sweeping immigration legislation this election year. The vote came after the White House threatened to veto the measure and underscored that the issue, a hot button for both parties, remained as intractable as it's been for years.

Alice was beginning to get very tired of all this sitting by herself with nothing to do: every so often she tried again to read the book in her lap, but it was made up almost exclusively of long paragraphs, and no quotation marks whatsoever, and what is the point of a book, thought Alice, that does not have any quotation marks? “Asymmetry,” a novel by Lisa Halliday When I grow old, we’ll go away on the train.

Make a scene at these places from your favorite films

Winter had trespassed into spring the day I visited Mirabell Gardens in Salzburg, Austria, where Julie Andrews and the Von Trapp children sang and danced their way through “Do-Re-Mi.” Snowflakes stuck to my nose and eyelashes and also found their icy way down my neck. Not that I cared. As a fan of “The Sound of Music” since forever, I was thrilled to skip in the footsteps of Maria & Co., snow and all. Turns out visiting the setting of a much-loved movie is a popular pastime... Читать дальше...

Stone Age soccer clash scores laughs in ‘Early Man’

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

A high point of dry humor in “Early Man,” and there are many, comes about halfway through — when a caveman grandfather figure with a bushy white mustache is recruited to a soccer team. “I’m not playing! I’m an old man,” he says, remaining deadpan. “I’m nearly 32!” The new stop-motion animated comedy by “Wallace and Gromit” and “Shaun the Sheep” creator Nick Park is filled with disarmingly funny moments. It lacks a narrative sweep, as if the story team came out of a long brainstorming session ... Читать дальше...
