GARY, Ind. (AP) — Police say two people have died after the truck they were riding in was struck by a freight train in northwestern Indiana. The Gary Police Department says officers responding to the crash about 8 a.m. Tuesday found that the eastbound train had hit the truck as it was crossing the tracks. Police say an adult and a juvenile were pronounced dead at the scene. Additional information about the victims wasn't immediately released. No other injuries were reported by police. The crash is under investigation.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — The former chief financial officer of the Oklahoma State Department of Health alleges another state agency knew of and tried to hide the Health Department's multimillion dollar budget woes. The Oklahoman reports that Mike Romero's allegations raise questions about whether the Office of Management and Enterprise Services knew about the department's financial issues. HOLLY, Mich. (AP) — A 55-year-old southeastern Michigan man faces charges after his wife was set on fire following an argument. Holly Police Chief Michael Story tells The Detroit News Tuesday that the 56-year-old woman suffered second- to third-degree burns mostly on one of her legs. She was being treated at a hospital. WXYZ-TV reports that police said the woman may have been doused with a flammable substance before being set on fire. BOSTON (AP) — The state's highest court is deciding the fate of a proposed ballot question that would put an additional tax on Massachusetts' highest earners and use the money to boost education and transportation. MAPLEWOOD, Minn. (AP) — Police say a third-grader at a Maplewood school got his finger on the trigger of a liaison officer's holstered gun, causing it to fire a gunshot into the floor. The police department says no one was injured when the gun discharged Monday afternoon as the officer was talking with students in the gym at Harmony Learning Center. HELENA, Mont. (AP) — Authorities have identified the Montana officer and the man he fatally shot. The Independent Record reports officials announced Monday that Lewis and Clark County Deputy Andrew Blythe shot and killed Taylor Schnortz of Townsend just before midnight Thursday near East Helena. Lewis and Clark County Sheriff Leo Dutton says the sheriff's office responded to a home after being asked to check on a man who was cutting himself. NEW YORK (AP) — Edmund White and Edna O'Brien are receiving lifetime achievement awards from PEN America. The literary and human rights organization announced Tuesday that White has won the PEN/Saul Bellow award for American fiction and the Irish-born O'Brien will be given the PEN/Nabokov award for international literature.
