Italy announces first case of new COVID variant

Italy on Saturday said it had detected its first case of the new Omicron strain of COVID-19 in a traveller from Mozambique. "The patient and the members of their family are in good health," the national health institute said in a statement.

UK toughens COVID rules as new strain arrives

Germany confirms two cases of new COVID strain: regional ministry

Updated: 7.15pm Germany on Saturday confirmed its first two cases of the new Omicron strain of COVID-19, in travellers who arrived at Munich airport from South Africa, regional officials said. "Two suspected cases of the new virus variant Omicron classified by the World Health Organization as a variant of concern have been confirmed in Bavaria," the health ministry of the southern state said in a statement.

Band club landlord says he has not received any rent for over 30 years

UK confirms first two cases of new COVID strain

Britain on Saturday confirmed its first two cases of the new Omicron strain of Covid-19, both linked to travel from southern Africa, and expanded travel restrictions on the region. "After overnight genome sequencing, the UK Health Security Agency has confirmed that two cases of Covid-19 with mutations consistent with B.1.1.529 (Omicron) have been identified in the UK," a government statement said. Nurses' union says top Health Ministry civil servant must resign

Nurses’ union MUMN has threatened to escalate industrial action at health centres unless a government order to stop all overtime for phlebotomists is not reversed within 48 hours. 95 new COVID cases, as patients in hospital steady at 12

Ninety-five new COVID-19 cases were reported on Saturday, as the number of virus patients requiring hospital treatment remained unchanged at 12. No deaths were reported overnight.   Data released by the Health Ministry showed that 47 virus patients recovered over the past day. As a result, the number of active virus cases currently stands at 1,051.  On Friday, 12 virus patients were being treated at Mater Dei Hospital,  with two of them undergoing intensive treatment.  One of those ITU patients has since been moved out of intensive care... CPD training closes off Gżira seafront to Sliema-bound traffic

A Civil Protection Department training exercise in a Gżira high-rise caused some traffic confusion on Saturday morning, with Sliema-bound motorists diverted away from the seafront. The training exercise, at the 17 East tower, is focused on ensuring CPD firefighters are prepared to handle emergency situations in high-rise buildings. Blame bad management, not bad weather, for flooding of roads - ADPD

It is poor water management, not bad weather, that is to blame for Maltese roads flooding following heavy rains, the ADPD has argued. Malta’s green party noted that some laws – most notably that requiring all new buildings to have a well – were being ignored by the Planning Authority and Water Services Corporation, resulting in huge amounts of water being dumped into sewage systems, overflowing them. What we know about the Omicron COVID-19 variant so far

In late 2020, a network of scientists in South Africa detected a COVID-19 variant that became known as the beta variant.  Now, sequencing by that same network - the Network for Genomics Surveillance in South Africa - has detected a new virus lineage, initially called B.1.1.529. Seventy-seven samples collected in mid-November 2021 in Gauteng province had this virus. It has also been reported in small numbers from neighbouring Botswana and Hong Kong. Man suspected of two hold-ups in 24 hours caught and arrested

A man believed to be behind two hold-ups in less than 24 hours has been caught and arrested by the police’s major crimes unit. The suspect, who is 38 years old, was caught in Qormi after police received a report that he was seen forcing open a parked car and stealing items from inside it.
