Libya coastguard says 280 migrants stopped and returned

Libya's coastguard said on Thursday it had stopped 280 migrants crammed on five boats, as they attempted the dangerous sea journey across the Mediterranean in a bid to reach Europe. "A Libyan coastguard patrol boat rescued 280 migrants of various African nationalities," it said in a statement. The migrants, found on four wooden boats and an inflatable dinghy, were taken to Libya's western port of Zuwara, near the Tunisian border. Introducing contemporary African art

A gallery in Sliema is introducing contemporary African art to the island with an exhibition by Ethiopian artist Dawit Adnew. Malta one of just two EU countries classified as 'very low concern' for COVID-19

Malta is one of only two EU countries classified by the bloc's disease agency as "of very low concern" for COVID-19, bucking the trend of soaring infection rates across Europe. In its weekly update, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) downgraded Malta and Spain from countries of "low concern" to "very low concern".  The assessment is based on case numbers, positivity rate, case rates among the over 65s, hospital admissions and death rates. Developer Stivala Group signs agreement for Townsquare residential tower

Developer Stivala Group has signed a memorandum of understanding with Townsquare to purchase, develop and sell its 28-storey residential tower in the heart of Sliema. ST Group chairman Micheal Stivala and a spokesperson for Townsquare Sliema Ltd both confirmed that the MOU had been signed but could not provide details as the parties were bound by a non-disclosure agreement. Australian movie star Russell Crowe has been spotted in Malta with a production crew linked to a film the actor is filming locally in the coming days. Industry sources said Crowe is likely to spend a week in Malta with the team filming Prizefighter, a biopic about 19th-century pugilist Jem Belcher.  Crowe had starred in the Ridley Scott-directed Roman epic Gladiator, the production of which spent 19 weeks in Malta in 1999, with Fort Ricasoli acting as a stand-in for ancient Rome. Pit bulls that mauled woman to death had scars 'linked to dog fights'

Two pit bulls that mauled to death a 95-year-old woman at her Msida home last year had scars that vets believe could be the remains of wounds suffered in dog fights. San Ġwann man seriously injured after falling off a ladder

Children wade through faeces to get to school, parents say

Children had to wade through faeces to get into their St Paul’s Bay primary school on Thursday morning as sewage flowed along the road past it into the sea. The local council said the responsible authorities had been contacted right away, but a disgruntled parent described how his two girls had to walk from the car into the school navigating through “faeces, virus and bacteria", carrying it into the building.
