300 pro-Haftar mercenaries to quit Libya

Some 300 mercenaries and foreign fighters on the side of Libyan strongman Khalifa Haftar are to leave the war-wracked country, military sources said Thursday. A "first group of 300 mercenaries and foreign fighters" are to be repatriated "at the request of France", representatives of the east-based Haftar's forces said in a statement. Siemens annual profits up despite supply chain snags

German industrial giant Siemens reported a jump in yearly net profit on Thursday despite a fourth quarter troubled by global supply chain issues that the company predicts will improve next year. After spinning off its energy subsidiary last year, the company had experienced “a very successful start as a focused technology company,” CEO Roland Busch said in a statement. A man convicted of terrorism in Belgium has been detained as he entered Bulgaria through its southeastern border with Turkey, prosecutors announced Thursday. Border police and state security agents intercepted the man on Wednesday in a special operation, the prosecution said in a statement. He is "sought in relation to a 20-year jail sentence for terrorism handed to him by a court in an EU country" and a terrorism sentence of nine years and five months in Turkey, it added. Motorists face diversions as works in Mrieħel go on

Traffic diversions can be expected on the Mrieħel bypass during excavation works to build a new underpass, Infrastructure Malta has said. A traffic management plan is being implemented and will be in force this month, it advised. The new roundabout underpass next to the Malta Financial Services Authority offices will connect Mdina Road to the Mrieħel bypass. Man hit by car in Floriana

A 55-year-old man was grievously injured on Thursday when he was hit by a car in Floriana. The police said the accident happened in Triq il-Vittmi Furjaniżi tal-Gwerra at 10am. The victim, a resident of irkirkara, was hit by a Mazda Demio driven by a 24-year-old woman from Kalkara. He was given first aid by a medical team on site and then taken to Mater Dei Hospital by ambulance. The police are investigating.

Drugs, contraband cigarettes, undeclared cash seized by Customs

Customs Officials seized €52,481 in undeclared cash from four passengers, two travelling to Sicily and two to Istanbul. In a statement, customs said its officials stopped two passengers boarding the ferry to Sicily. One was stopped after suspicion was raised by canine officer Charlie. When asked how much cash he was carrying, one of the passengers replied he had between €5,000-€7,000. But he actually had €11,760. Back in court on drug charges two months after being granted bail

A man who allegedly flushed drugs down his kitchen sink before police knocked at the door of his apartment, was remanded in custody after pleading not guilty to drug possession and money laundering.  Ian Zammit, 32, from Żejtun, was granted bail two months ago in separate criminal proceedings. Another two cars stolen in Canada have been discovered in shipping containers en route to Kuwait, Malta Customs said.  The seizure is part of an auto theft investigation dubbed 'Operation Crockpot' that investigates vehicles stolen in violent carjackings in York, Canada to be sold overseas.
