Celtic’s chances of progress in the Europa League were ended by a late Bayer Leverkusen rally to lose 3-2 in Germany on Thursday as Real Betis, Lazio and Galatasaray secured their places in the knockout stages. Dismay at the demolition of a landmark Sliema house has been replaced by more outrage at the “atrocity” of the inclusion of its original niche into the new block of flats. Antibiotic use dropped in first year of the pandemic

There was a significant drop in antibiotic use in Malta during the first year of the pandemic, new analysis has found. European Union figures show an almost 20% drop in overall consumption of antibiotics in Malta during 2020, compared with the previous year. It was a larger drop than the EU average of more than 15%. The European Centre of Disease Prevention and Control noted that the decrease “had a more noticeable effect in countries where overuse and inappropriate use was common before the COVID-19 pandemic”. Slovakia enters partial lockdown as COVID cases rise

French fishermen to blockade Channel Tunnel freight, ferries

French fishermen will on Friday block ferry traffic into three Channel ports and the movement of goods through the tunnel between France and the UK in protest over post-Brexit fishing rights, a union said. Approval of COVID-19 vaccine for young children 'great news' - Chris Fearne

Health Minister Chris Fearne described the news that the European Medicines Agency (EMA) had approved a COVID-19 vaccine for young children as "great", with Malta now expected to roll out the jab in the coming weeks.  The EMA announced on Thursday it had approved Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine for children aged five to 11. This will be the first vaccine cleared for use among the age group. The Pfizer vaccine had been approved for children older than 12 in summer. Diego Maradona’s brother to host training camp for kids in Qormi next month

Hugo Maradona, the brother of the legendary Argentine player Diego Armando Maradona, will be in Malta next month to lead a number of training sessions for young players at the Qormi FC premises. Police union files judicial protest on call for assistant commissioners

The Malta Police Union on Thursday filed a judicial protest complaining that the conditions in an internal call for assistant commissioners were "restrictive and discriminatory", putting its members at a disadvantage. Third of university students, staff know someone sexually harassed on campus

Over a third of university students and staff know someone who experienced sexual harassment on campus, a new survey has shown. The survey also showed that more than half - 57.8% - of university students and staff are not aware of the university's sexual harassment policy. The policy has been recently updated following consulation.  The survey showed that some 31% knew someone who suffered sexual harassment on campus and 60% said no action was taken by the victim for a range of reasons - including fear of victimisation. EU plans transparency in online political ads

The European Commission will on Thursday present a plan to oblige online platforms to clearly label paid political advertising, according to a document seen by AFP. Advertising designed to promote a political party or candidate will have to be marked as such and indicate who has paid for the campaign. Requests for mental health support jump 500% since COVID

Requests for help with mental health issues have increased by about 500 per cent since the start of the pandemic, according to the Richmond Foundation.  The NGO, which focuses on mental health and provides free services for those in need said people were initially experiencing anxiety but were now dealing with issues related to pandemic fatigue. Cash stolen in Paceville hold-up

A hooded man armed with a knife escaped with cash late on Wednesday after a hold-up in a shop in St Augustine Street, Paceville. The incident happened at about 11pm. The 31-year-old shopkeeper, from St Paul's Bay, was unharmed. The police are searching for the suspect.
