The pan European rights body the Council of Europe has pulled a campaign promoting diversity among women and their freedom to wear the Muslim headscarf after it sparked an outcry in fiercely secular France. The online campaign - co-financed by the European Union - was launched last week by the Strasbourg-based institution and touched a nerve among the right in France where campaigning is ramping up ahead of next spring's presidential election. Tweeted images showed portraits of two smiling young... Читать дальше...

Ronaldo is Man. United’s Jordan, says Solskjaer after latest rescue act

Times of Malta

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer compared Cristiano Ronaldo’s talismanic influence at Manchester United to NBA legend Michael Jordan after he scored twice to salvage a 2-2 draw at Atalanta on Tuesday. For the third time in four Champions League games since returning for a second spell at Old Trafford, Ronaldo rescued United with a late goal as his sweetly struck volley in the 91st minute snatched a barely deserved point in Bergamo. The 36-year-old also scored late winners at home to Villarreal and Atalanta... Читать дальше...

Liverpool prepare again for Atletico amid feud over style, character

Times of Malta

Jurgen Klopp wants to say the right things when it comes to Atletico Madrid and Diego Simeone but there is always an itch he ends up scratching. Liverpool play Atletico again in the Champions League on Wednesday in a game that this time carries more significance for the Spaniards than the Reds. Klopp’s team are already five points clear at the top of a group that looked awkward when the draw came out in August.   Continue reading this article on Sports Desk, the new sports website by Times of... Gozitan lawyers who have been taking action for a month will be returning to the courts on Wednesday as efforts are being made for the situation at the Gozo courts to be addressed. In October, more than 100 sittings of the Gozo courts had to be postponed due to the second action in four months taken by lawyers over the poor condition of the courts. Gozo lawyers refused to attend sittings at the law courts in Victoria but are still doing other, non-court work. But following a meeting with Justice Minister Edward Zammit Lewis on Monday... Financial services regulation: now and its future

Times of Malta

Ten years ago, the European Banking Authority (EBA) was established. Its birth on January 1, 2011, was hallowed as the start of a major overhaul of the EU’s financial services regulatory architecture, and the EBA, plus its ‘sisters’ ESMA (the European Securities Markets Authority) and EIOPA (the European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority) have, in fact, totally changed how regulation is now both inspired and effected within the Union. Two important considerations immediately come to mind. Читать дальше...

The desolate one - Wayne Flask

Times of Malta

A few months ago, I was jolted out of my early morning daze by a photo of Environment Minister Aaron Farrugia cosying up to the eminent Joseph Portelli during the celebrations for Ħamrun Spartans’ league triumph. In days where the connivance between politics and business has brought a thick stream of murk to the surface, Portelli’s arm around Farrugia’s shoulder should have set alarms screaming. As Farrugia knows too well, Portelli is much more than the chief Spartan: he’s also the biggest and most unstoppable developer on the islands... Читать дальше...

We may still face some worrying internal obstacles to justice

Times of Malta

The courts, the attorney general, the police and the security service have a common aim: to uphold the rule of law. They each have particular functions and duties but they must all ensure justice is done, the courts being the ultimate arbiter. It is essential they operate strictly within the parameters of the law and shoulder their responsibilities to ensure justice takes its course. Otherwise, as the former chief justice, Silvio Camilleri, had warned, the “edifice of the administration of justice... Читать дальше...

Implementing our first anti-racism strategy – Alexander Tortell

Times of Malta

It is positive that the recent launch of the government’s Anti-Racism Strategy (2021-2023) has sparked off a debate on racism and the response to it and I take Therese Comodini Cachia’s article ‘Addressing racism in Malta’ (October 28) in that spirit. As Comodini Cachia undoubtedly knows, a strategy like this sits under a typology known as ‘NAPAR’ (national action plan against racism). The document launched on September 30 of this year is the first official Maltese NAPAR. What she refers to from 2010 are reports and drafts and... Читать дальше...
