Extending compulsory education to 18 'will not work', educators warn

Government denies dishing out jobs ahead of election

The government has denied giving out jobs in the public sector to secure votes at the next general election. It was asked to respond to a claim made earlier this week by the Malta Employers’  Association, which said businesses could already feel the “talent drain” from the private sector as several employees migrate to government jobs ahead of the election. “The truth is that there is no employment drive whatsoever, neither within the public service nor the wider public sector,” a spokesperson for the government said. An Afghan man living in Malta has been pleading with Maltese officials to help get his brother out of the country as the deadline for US-led evacuations looms closer. Maltese drink eight litres of pure alcohol a year

People over 15 in Malta drink roughly eight litres of pure alcohol per year, equivalent to more than three litres of beer every week, fresh data has shown. A review by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) published recently gave a snapshot of the alcohol-drinking patterns among those aged 15 and over. Alleged cocaine trafficker, 22, denied bail

A group of 95 people sceptical about COVID-19 has filed a civil court case against the Superintendent of Public Health, Charmaine Gauci, saying the "disproportionate" COVID-19 measures are "unconstitutional and go against the European Convention on Human Rights". Apple's Tim Cook gets $750 million bonus payout

Apple chief executive Tim Cook has received a bonus of some $750 million, reflecting his performance at the US technology giant in his 10 years at the helm, a regulatory filing showed. Another COVID-positive woman dies as 49 new cases are recorded

An 85-year-old woman died while positive to COVID-19 overnight, the health authorities said, bringing the number of deaths from the virus so far up to 440. In their daily update, the authorities said 49 new cases were reported overnight as 52 other patients recovered. The new cases, found from 3,249 swab tests, bring the number of active cases to 636.
