Simon Schembri, a former police sergeant who lost his arm in a hit-and-run in May 2018, is to be financially compensated by the government. Schembri retired from the force in February, having completed 25 years of service. German sportswear brand Adidas on Thursday bumped up its earnings outlook for the year, as it expects the Olympics and the upcoming European and American football seasons to boost its sales. The Bavaria-based group recorded a net profit of €397 million between April and June, as pandemic restrictions eased and the football European Championships got going. The Greens are looking to finalise their squad ahead of the start of the season and are currently in negotiations with the 26-year-old. Qatar Airways said on Thursday that it had been ordered by regulators in the Gulf state to ground 13 of its Airbus A350 aircraft over the rapid degradation of fuselage surfaces. The airline, one of the Gulf "big three" carriers, previously stopped accepting delivery of the aircraft over the issue, according to media reports in June. Canada’s Damian Warner produced two days of consistent excellence to win the men’s Olympic decathlon gold on Thursday, using his bronze-medal showing at the 2016 Rio Games as motivation. Belgium’s Nafissatou Thiam successfully defended her Olympic heptathlon title on Thursday, a task made easier by the withdrawal of British world champion Katarina Johnson-Thompson. Spain’s Alberto Gines Lopez held off his rivals to become the first Olympic sport climbing champion on Thursday, winning the men’s combined event in Tokyo. Two young Turkish boys will today be able to see their mothers in person again, eight days after being separated when a court jailed the women for six months for using forged travel documents. Akif Yavuz, who turns three next week, and Sina Deneri, 4, will be reunited with their “anne” – the Turkish word for “mummy” – for several hours today. Malta's COVID-19 infection rate has dropped for the first time since mid-June to become the eighth-highest rate in Europe, according to the EU's disease centre. In their weekly update, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) confirmed Malta's infection rate stood at 354.28 cases per 100,000 inhabitants last week, down from 490.1 and 379 in the previous two weeks.  The ECDC's rates are worked out from the previous weeks’ figures. British police said on Thursday they had arrested 11 people suspected of sending racist messages on social media to England players after last month’s Euro 2020 final defeat to Italy.
