Lebanese protestors carried imitation coffins in a symbolic funeral procession from Beirut port Sunday to demand justice, days after the first anniversary of a vast dockside explosion that killed more than 200 people. Prisoner in hospital after suicide attempt

A 30-year-old prisoner has been hospitalised in a critical condition after an attempted suicide at the prisons on Sunday afternoon. The prisoner is Maltese and he was found in his cell at 5.05pm, the prisons said in a statement. Sources said that the prisoner was alone in his cell when the incident happened. The prisoner was assisted by the facility's doctors and nurses and then transferred to Mater Dei Hospital. The police are investigating and an inquiry is being held, the prisons said. Sources... Expert team to boost drive on sustainable development goals

A team of experts made up of technical officers from various ministries is being set up to identify data gaps and give impetus to the country’s drive towards reaching the sustainable development goals (SDGs). UN member states have agreed to reach these 17 goals by 2030, to improve quality of life and ensure the well-being of future generations. Firefighting aircraft crashes in Greece, no casualties

A firefighting aircraft crashed in Greece on Sunday, but there were no casualties, the fire brigade told AFP. The Pezetel aircraft crashed while tackling a blaze at the Ionian island of Zakynthos, in Western Greece. The pilot is safe and sound and was helped by other firefighters, the ANA news agency reported.  

Two women injured in Tarxien accident

Two women were injured, one of them grievously, in a traffic accident in Tarxien. The police said the accident happened in Triq San Anard at 2.15pm. A 23-year-old woman from Birkirkara was grievously injured when the Fiat Punto she was driving collided with an Audi A1 that was being driven by an 18-year-old woman from Marsascala. The latter suffered slight injuries. Both women were assisted by a medical team and members of the Civil Protection Department on site and were then taken to Mater Dei Hospital by ambulance. Motorcyclist injured in Marsalforn accident

A 31-year-old man was grievously injured on Sunday in a traffic accident in Marsalforn. The police said the accident happened in Triq ir-Rabat at 12.15pm. The victim, who is from Victoria, was riding a KTM that was involved in a collision with a Renault Megane that was being driven by a 53-year-old man from Fontana. He was given first aid by a medical team on site and then transferred to Gozo General Hospital by ambulance. The police are investigating.



Detainees say they were put in solitary confinement and beaten up

An Egyptian man is claiming he was stripped to his boxers and put in solitary confinement for four days after informing a detention officer he was served food that he said made him sick. The man told his lawyer he was forced to sleep on a concrete floor and could not contact his lawyer or relatives. Police confiscate birds being sold illegally at Floriana market

The police on Sunday confiscated 34 birds that were being sold illegally at the Floriana open market. In a statement, they said that officers from its Environmental Protection Unit carried out inspections at the market together with the Wild Bird Regulation Unit. During the inspections, they saw that some hawkers were illegally selling the birds. This was because they belonged to species that cannot be sold. Two COVID-19 patients die as active cases go to below 1,000

Two COVID-19 patients died overnight, bringing the number of people who died in Malta while positive up to 426. The victims were a 63-year-old woman and a 77-year-old man. LESA, the local enforcement agency warned on Sunday about scam messages being sent as it urged the public to ignore such messages. The message ‘reminds’ recipients that their case is being transferred to court on a particular day. This seems to be the latest in a spate of scams many are receiving.
