Neptunes, San Ġiljan march on after easy wins

Neptunes and San Ġiljan scored easy victories over Marsaskala and Birzebbuga respectively in Saturday’s two Premier League matches. Neptunes registered their 11th successive victory, this time at the expense of Birzebbuga in a match that had the Reds making a flying start to go 4-1 ahead in the first session and extend that advantage to 6-1 before the change of ends. Gozo Channel says ferries safe after woman 'falls' into sea

Ferries between Malta and Gozo have all the necessary safety measures in place to help prevent people falling overboard, Gozo Channel chairman, Joe Cordina told Times of Malta. But people could not be stopped from jumping into the sea if they decide to do so on the spur of the moment, he added. Zach Muscat’s Casa Pia secure first league win after beating Porto B

Malta international defender Zach Muscat was a second-half entry for Casa Pia in his team’s 2-0 win over Porto B, in the Portuguese second-tier. Casa Pia were facing Porto B in their second league game and were striving to make amends for their opening defeat at the hands of Academica Viseu (1-2). Several dead as powerful 7.2-magnitude quake strikes Haiti

A powerful 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck Haiti on Saturday, causing several deaths and toppling buildings in the disaster-plagued Caribbean nation still recovering from a devastating 2010 quake. The epicenter of the quake, which shook homes and sent people scrambling for protection, was about 100 miles (160 kilometers) by road from the center of the densely populated capital Port-au-Prince. Figures show effectiveness of vaccines ‘indisputable’

People who have been vaccinated make up just a quarter of those who have contracted COVID-19 in the fourth wave of the pandemic, from a population in which close to 90 per cent have taken the jab. Man struck with bottle, injured in Żabbar street fight

A 27-year old man was seriously injured on Friday night when he was struck with a bottle during a fight in Żabbar.  Police said the incident took place at 12.30am in Misraħ is-Sliem and that the 27-year old, a local resident, was involved in an argument which escalated into violence. A 26-year old Marsa resident was arrested shortly afterwards in connection with the incident.  Police investigations are ongoing.

Mobile phone thief caught thanks to tracking app

A mobile phone thief was caught thanks to a tracking app installed on the device that allowed police to track him down within hours.  Police zeroed in on Carmel Schembri, a 55-year old waste management worker from Żurrieq, as the suspect behind the aggravated theft that took place along the Qui Si Sana seafront on Friday afternoon between 2:00pm and 3:45pm. ADPD: Make all new developments carbon-neutral

All new developments should be carbon-neutral, with clean energy production requirements included as a prerequisite for development permits, ADPD has said. "We've been talking about this for years but it still hasn't happened. We shouldn't be eating into our open land to make solar farms. One death and 94 new COVID cases, with 38 patients in hospital

An 85-year-old woman died while COVID-19 positive between Friday and Saturday, health authorities said as they reported 94 new virus cases.  The woman was the 430th person to die while infected since the pandemic began in Malta.  Saturday's 94 new cases were counterbalanced by 120 recoveries, bringing the number of active virus cases in the country down to below 700. Man was beaten and thrown into sea 'like a sack', court told

July days were hotter than average, with slightly more sun and fewer clouds

Two out of every three days in July were hotter than the norm, with temperatures reaching a maximum of 38°C on the last day of that month.  The average July temperature stood at 33°C, Malta International Airport’s weather station said, with 20 days that month clocking temperatures higher than the 31.6°C that is the historic average for July.  Sea temperatures were also higher than normal, averaging 27.1°C - 2.4°C higher than the norm. Watch: Gozo Channel worker and driver come to blows at Mġarr Harbour

Police have opened an investigation into possible assault following a fight between a ferry passenger and a Gozo Channel worker that was caught on video.  The incident, which occurred at around 2pm at Mġarr Harbour, involved two Gozitan men, both aged 62, who are from Nadur and Xagħra.  A police spokesperson said that neither man had suffered any significant injuries but that an investigation into the incident was ongoing.  Footage sent to Times of Malta shows a ferry worker arguing with a passenger... Għallis landfill is being expanded vertically to win Malta some time

The capacity of the Għallis landfill is being increased by the equivalent of 130 Olympic-sized swimming pools, without taking up any more land. Hundreds of students fail Maltese, English, maths SEC exams

Thousands of teenagers received their SEC exam results on Friday but there was no improvement in the core subjects, as hundreds again failed their Maltese, maths and English exams. Students who do not obtain a grade between 1 and 7 get a failing ‘U’ grade, meaning their result is “unclassified”.
