67-year-old injured in fall at construction site

A man was grievously injured on Tuesday after falling from a balcony around one storey high at a construction site in San Ġwann. The police said the accident happened in Triq in-Naxxar. The victim, a 67-year-old man from Swieqi, was working at the site when he fell. He was given first aid by a medical team on site and then taken Mater Dei Hospital by ambulance. The police are investigating.

US Senate backs highest honour for police in Capitol riot

The United States Senate unanimously agreed Tuesday to award Congress's highest honour to law enforcement officials who tried to protect the Capitol during the violent assault by Donald Trump supporters on January 6. Protesters gather to demand resignation of Edward Zammit Lewis

People gathered in Valletta on Tuesday night to call for the resignation of Justice Minister Edward Zammit Lewis over his conversations with alleged murder conspirator Yorgen Fenech.    The gathering was organised by civil society NGO Repubblika, which said it was unacceptable that the role of minister of justice and governance is held by someone who had maintained a relationship with Fenech.   The businessman stands accused of complicity in the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia and has been linked to high-level government corruption. Speaker rebuts Repubblika’s claims about denied entry to parliament

'They could have killed us': Trawler capsizes small fishing boat

The owner of a fishfarm has admitted one of its trawlers caused a small fishing boat to capsize, knocking two men into the water along with all of their belongings. Charles Azzopardi, however, denied the trawler smashed into the smaller vessel, but instead claimed the boat was overturned by waves made by the trawler as it passed by.  The incident was detailed in a Facebook post by Aleandro Spiteri Monsigneur,  who described a horror end to his first-ever fishing trip on July 13. Police break up bike theft ring

Sliema district police have arrested two men, breaking up a bike theft ring. The stolen bikes were then being sold. The police said on Tuesday that in the past months they noticed an increase in the number of reports regarding stolen bikes from Sliema, Gżira and the surrounding areas. Following investigations, the police identified some of the bikes which were allegedly being sold on the open market. Police used pepper spray to control an aggressive man they were arresting on Monday after he was caught smashing car windows in St Paul's Bay. Around 11.30pm on Monday, the police were informed that a man had been spotted smashing car windows in Triq Cassarino, St Paul’s Bay. District police went on site and foun, a 25-year-old man holding a long rod. He was also carrying a long knife and another rod. Two women hospitalised after St Paul's Bay accident

Two women were hospitalised on Tuesday after they were injured in an accident in St Paul’s Bay. The police said the accident happened in Triq il-Korp tal-Pijunieri at around 5pm. The victims, both 64-year-olds, were travelling in a Renault Zoe that was involved in a collision with a Mercedes driven by a 24-year-old man from St Paul’s Bay. A parked Volkswagen was also hit in the collision. The condition of the victims, both foreign nationals, is not yet known.

Chip shortage ‘likely’ to hit second half, BMW predicts

Power cuts in 27 localities during heatwave, demand reaches record highs

Children's Commissioner urges court to 'redress' jail term for Turkish mothers

The Office of the Commissioner for Children has joined calls urging the court to rethink a decision to jail two Turkish mothers, separating them from their very young children.  Rabia Yavuz, 27, and Muzekka Deneri, 29, were last week sentenced to six months in prison for travelling with false documents. BP returns to profit as oil prices recover

BP returned to profit in the second quarter, the British energy giant announced on Tuesday, having posted a hefty loss one year earlier as the pandemic crushed oil prices. Net profit for April-June hit $3.1 billion (€2.6bn). That compared with a loss after tax of $16.8 billion in the second quarter of 2020. With demand for crude crashing as the coronavirus pandemic took hold early last year, oil prices plunged into negative territory. US aerospace tech group to buy UK peer for £6.3 billion

Parker-Hannifin Corporation, a US company specialised in aerospace technologies, has agreed to buy British peer Meggitt for £6.3 billion, the pair announced Monday. An Instagram influencer linked to a €13 million cyber heist at Bank of Valletta has pleaded guilty to money laundering charges in a US court.
