Lionel Messi signs two-year deal with PSG: club

Argentina forward Lionel Messi, who left Barcelona after 21 years last week has signed a two-year contract with Paris Saint-Germain, with the option of an additional year, the French club announced on Tuesday. Messi, 34, will wear the number 30 as revealed in a video by the club, the number he had when he began his professional career at Barcelona between 2004-2006. “I am excited to begin a new chapter of my career at Paris Saint-Germain,” said Messi in a statement on the club’s website. Mġarr councillors irrigate woodland as trees wilt

Mgarr councillors Paul Vella and Wistin Vella have taken it upon themselves to water 23 tumolo of tinder-dry woodland in their locality, possibly saving it from destruction. “I noticed how dry the area had become, as the heat persisted the trees began to wilt, we needed to do something fast," Paul Vella, who is the mayor, said.  The woodland, along Sir Harry Luke Street, is public land administered by the local council. “We used over 100,000 litres of water in this area last week, and some of the trees are coming back to life. That’s the sentiment of Mark Cutajar, the chief executive of SportMalta, as the 2021 Tokyo Olympics end. “Obviously you cannot be satisfied with Malta’s results,” said Cutajar, who heads the official body that promotes success in sport for the country. Malta opened their title defence in style as they passed their first test with flying colours. The side dominated their opening game as they cruised to a 96-65 victory against San Marino on Tuesday. Young man admits series of thefts, gets probation and chance to kick drug habit

A youth who admitted to a spate of thefts sparked by his drug dependency has been placed under probation whilst pursuing rehabilitation from substance abuse. Iklin road culverts being replaced after biker's accident

Used car importers seek government help to ease Brexit problems

Importers of second-hand cars said on Tuesday that the government had dismissal their suggestions to negotiate a derogation from the EU-UK Brexit agreement that would have Malta considered as a disadvantaged state due to the norms in traffic rules inherited from the UK and thus the need to import right-hand drive cars. Mount Etna taller than ever after six months of activity

Mount Etna's southeastern crater has grown in height after six months of activity, Italy's vulcano monitoring agency said Tuesday, making Europe's tallest active volcano taller than ever. Blaze at bowling alley contained

A small fire at the Eden Superbowl in Paceville was quickly extinguished on Tuesday afternoon. The fire broke out in a kitchen at 3.15pm and was contained there. The police confirmed that no one was injured. No serious damage was caused.

A TV and radio audience survey commissioned by the Broadcasting Authority has confirmed TVM as the most-watched television station in Malta, with foreign TV stations collectively coming second. One TV and Net TV come third and fourth, with their popularity being highest among the 'older age cohort' aged 41+ years, the survey says. A man who was found selling cannabis in Qawra on Monday, was jailed and fined after pleading guilty in court on Tuesday. Lamin Sillah, a 23-year old Gambian national resident in Qawra, was arrested by the Drug Squad acting on information about suspected drug trafficking in the Fra Ben area. Żejtun is likely to be the first village to have temporarily pedestrianised squares and streets as part of the ‘Slow Streets’ project. GO subsidiaries drive 2.5% revenue growth despite sluggish telecoms performance

GO’s group revenue for the first six months of the year rose by 2.5% when compared to the same period last year, with growth in two of its subsidiaries making up for a drop in telecoms income.   Pre-tax profit for the first six months of 2021 amounted to €7.9 million, a slight decline over 2020.
